def a lot fewer cars then expected, oh well
meets depend on how many people show interest each week, if nobody bumps the thread there is no meet

The car worked great! Handling is off the chart. The white 2011 Cayman behind me never caught me. Kept up with an e92 M3 as well.
Got a BMW Performance steering wheel too. I never had a clean lap when I would time myself. Ran a 1:07 on a couple laps. Clean lap would most likely be a 1:06 or 1:05 which is pretty good. Pulled 1.2g in a couple of turns too. Then again, I wasn't really watching my steering wheel all that much. ![]()

As far as the N54s go, only Art had no problems (not a surprise considering it's a brand new M in the novice group) - Jeff had some heat issues and had to take some cool down laps and I got a wonderful P30FF code - boost leak - that will probably cause me to pull my hair out getting the dealer to try to fix it. Started when the car was really hot (but nowhere near jeff's heat level) near the end of the 3rd session before the rain, then was present even when cold/rainy for the rest of the weekend. Could be wastegate related, could be a split hose somewhere, definitely going to be a pain in the ass. Hasn't happened on the street though, of course. Still, the car wasn't totally gutless and I drove it anyway. Saturday we had sun and 75 degrees for our first 3 sessions then a monsoon for the 4th. Sunday was rain all day, we left after session 3 and skid pad so we could drive home in the daylight - highway was a mess and that 200 mile drive was exhausting, especially after being fried mentally from the track. I'd be rushing to sign up for another event if the N54 had any semblance of reliability - I just cant wait to hear what the dealer tells me about getting the engine malfunction light within a minute of pulling onto the track. Totally stock software btw (300hp is PLENTY for jefferson, my skill level, and a soaked track). Most interesting thing I learned this weekend - until Saturday I knew nothing about braking. At all. It was such a great experience to become a way better driver and more humble driver all at once...there is SO much to learn.

Summit was a blast! Just got back about an hour ago. My bro and I stayed for the 3rd day. He did half and I stayed until the end. It was also another rain day. My bro had fun even though he wasn't paired up with the front wheel drive instructor until the last session yesterday. When I had talked to the chapter president a month or so ago he was to be paired up with a fwd instructor. He had fun though and Ben and Jeff may have seen him waving as he was doing his 180s. Jeff was getting crazy on the skid pad doing multiple 360s. I'll see if I have any videos.
On the Jefferson Circuit I was intimidated by the black 3 coupes pulling up on me with either the orange or bright white angel eyes, while trying to stick to my line. ![]() I was fortunate to be paired with an older instructor from Ottawa, who drives a Z4M. Apparently from what he was saying that and the 1M have very similar driving characteristics. We had the same philosophy and I learned so much from him. I think I have an idea of what it is like to drive smoothly now, not that I can do it well, but have an idea. It's amazing to drive with some of these instructors and driving braking from 130 to 50mph and not feel a thing. He was helping me find some of the faster lines through the courses which was awesome. After lunch today they ran mixed skill groups together since people had left early to get home. All I can say was it was quite an experience being able to catch up to the more experienced people in the corners because of the lines chosen and then lap them with the HP on tap in the N54. The car held up amazing. I had consulted with VAC a while ago and they recommended upgrading the brakes with stainless lines, hawk dtc10 front pads for the track of course a brake fluid with a higher boiling point. They also recoomended I change the OEM pads to some Portfield brand pa. I had those in the rear. All I can say now is I am hooked. I wanted to get into road courses years back, but wasn't in a situation to do so then. Looking forward to the next one. Maybe we can do the Del Val BMWCCA HPDE in August at NJMP as a group. Justin you should see the brake dust on the wheels now! |

Not sure if this is characteristic of this engine. ONly my second turbo my FSI 2.0T turbo in the A4 burns a quart in 5k miles. The n54 burned 2 quarts in the past 600 miles before the track event. This has been in the last 3 weeks. |
