I've had a price for this to be fixed:

Diagnosis of the fault is 72
The part is 94+VAT
2 hours labour is 200

384!

Would this be an easy job to attempt myself?

I've just bought the exact same one fitted to my car from GSF for literally have that price !

It's a job that is deffo needed to be tackled from underneath !
Too much in the way from getting at it form the top.

If I get chance I'll replace mine later this week and give a rough guide

It sits on the n/s of the block (inlet manifold side) toward the back of the block, right in front of the starter motor
Behind two water pipes and a couple of fuel lines

Bolted to the block with two 10mm nuts

The black box is about 5" square with two electrical connections coming off the bottom

I got a glow plug light tonight, could that mean the controller is still working and I've got a failed plug instead?

Before I changed the plugs I got upto 5 failing plugs, never once did I see any glow plug warning lights
Even with a defective controller currently I don't get a warning light

You need to have you car scanned and go from there

Just bumping this up as I had my car read and all 6 glow plugs show as failed, Rich ( who's been coding my car for me ) thanks again rich has advised that it's the glow plug controller unit that's prob gone as i've had ( touch wood ) starting probe, after read this little thread I think it's a home repair job as I'm ok with spanners, does anybody know how long a job it is to do.?

What's the average price for the part?

for the price of glowplugs. just change the plugs while your there and the controller as ive had 5 plugs come up in error and i only changed plugs and car felt better and errors went when some say if you get more than 4 just change the controller and not plugs

ive always wanted to know where it is on 330d as i dont know myself

Nobody's mentioned it but you can test the glowplugs with a simple multimeter when you get down to them.

Of course if you have went that far (removing inlet manifold you might as well change them anyways)

All you do is turn multimeter to continuity setting.

Unhook all glowplugs from the loom

Then check between electrical connection on top of glowplug to engine earth (any piece of metal)

If you get an open circuit the plug is dead. A good plug you should see around 1 ohm continuity
