Used 80s centurion. It's what I ride and I love it. I got it expecting to only mildly take up cycling, but I really ended up liking it a lot more than I thought. Of course it also depends though, on where you want to ride.

You can get a entry Specialized Allez for about 650 new or a Trek 1.1 for a little more. Both great bikes and will serve you very well. Make sure to go to bike store and get sized for the correct size frame, these are assuming you are looking for a road bike.

I was thinking the Specialized Sirrus or the Trek FX 7.2. Thoughts?

it sounds silly, but i really recommend getting an older steel bike from Craigslist. Get yourself measured up first and go for one that matches. Cheapest way to dip a toe into the sport and really wont be a bike you mind riding for a while.

I'm looking at a few to get into riding again.
Looking at two 29ers: 1. Trek 8.5 DS 2. Raleigh Talus Comp Both are hardtails and have front shock lockouts for tarmac riding.

If you like the price and style of both of these, try them out...as they will have a different feel. Note that the flat bar on these can be extended to give you a different angle/feeling as well.

Test rode a Trek 8.3 DS today as well as Specialized Crosstrail. Both felt nice and the Trek has the shock lockout so it rides like a road bike. I rode the Trek FX 7.2 and didn't like the feel of it as much (especially over bumps). I think I will end up with either of the first 2 I mentioned.

You would be better off spending that money on some small upgrades, like a better derailleur or crank.

Funny you posted this. I'm looking to get a mountain bike (not into the whole road bike thing, want to be able to do trails). Can anyone recommend a decent bike in the $300 range? I went and tested some out for sizing purposes and I'm pretty sure I need a 29".

This is the Specialized Crosstrail (I really like this and might end up with it). Trek DS 8.2- good bike as well. Pretty much same as the Crosstrail. Both run around $550 new (a shop near me sells either one for $500). So I'm sure you can get a used one from Craigslist for $300 or so. Last edited by BMW E90; 04-23-2012 at 09:35 PM. |

The Trek DS 8.2 or 8.3 is a overall good hybrid bike. I tested it a few weeks ago and was very impressed. I'm more into mountain biking and riding trails so I decided to got for the Trek 3700. Otherwise, if I wasn't going off-road I would have definitely chose the Trek DS 8.3. In the end you can't go wrong with the DS 8.3. Just my $0.02; since your doing causal riding and exercising like you mention, you should go for the 8.2 instead of the 8.3 since its cheaper and you won't really need the mechanical brake discs for the extra stopping power.
