Effects of Upsized Wheels and Tires

This article has been out for a while, but I thought I'd post it.

http://www.caranddriver.com/features...d-tires-tested

No big surprises here. C&D strived to keep the tires and diameter similar. So larger wheels had tires with lower sidewall height which contributed to better handling. Smaller diameter wheels weighed less contributing to better acceleration.

15" & 16" tires had siginificantly less width. 205-16" matched the 225-17" on the skidpad though.

Not totally true.

My 17x8 style 158 with 225/45/17 runflat. Weight was 55lbs
My new setup is going to be apex arc8 18x9.5 allround with 235/40/18 normal tyres. Weight is around 41lbs.

So my one inch bigger and 1.5 inch wider wheels with wider tyres will weight 14lbs less.

Not quite sure what that means, but my quess is i shouldnīt compare different manufacturers sizes to each other. But still smaller wheels arent always lighter.

My comment was just based on the c&d results. The point being that a lighter tire/wheel combo is generally better for acceleration. Smaller wheels aren't always lighter, but for the test they were.

It means you are comparing tires and wheels which differ in ways other than size - like comparing apples to oranges. The C&D test compared the same wheels with the same tires except for the neglible difference between V and W rated tires.

Obviously, if you replace a wheel with a different larger, but lighter one, and RFT with go-flat tires, the resulting combo will weigh less. But that misses the point of the C&D test.

Wrngway, thanks for the post.

No problem. Here's a link with some more background on the "apples to oranges" saying:
