Y cable question
Hi,
I have my ipod connected via the ipod cable usb cable into to the usb port and separate 3.5mm cable from the ipod to the car aux input. I can play the songs fine. My question is does the dedicated Y-cable give any extra features that i don't get with my setup as bmw wants $75.00 for the Y cable? Thank you. |

Y cable allows you to control the iPod via the steering wheel buttons. I picked up an OEM Y cable on eBay for <$20. No reason to pay dealership prices on those things.

Another option is to just use a usb flash drive. I was using an 8 gb ipod and was frustrated that I couldn't get all my collection on there. Doing some research I read that that one of the things that detracts from music quality in our cars is when you let the DAC in the ipod do the conversion and send the signal through the aux input. So instead of just buying a larger capacity ipod (I don't have an iphone) I bought a 32gb flash drive and was able to put my entire library on it in a lossless file format. The music quality is great and it provides all the control from the radio that I need. Other benefits are it frees up the aux port and removes that annoying cable connection to the ipod when you store the ipod in the pouch under the console lid.
