Southern RI is also pretty nice. Lots to do down in the Narragansett/South Kingstown area. IMO the beaches are far better in Narragansett than they are in Newport.

If you're that close to NY I can understand. In that case I'd say go the extra 50 miles to Boston if staying in a city is what you're looking for. Way better than Providence.
