F30 Sport Loan Car

Well my E92 has been in the dealers for 3 days having some issues sorted out and while its been there I have had the loan of a F30, got to say even though it drives very well and the seats are really comfortable I still don't like the looks and the interior. I can now say after "owning" one for three days I would not buy one.

BMW will be sad to hear that. All they can hope for is existing owners to be impressed.

The interior is cheap and tacky..i sat in one the other day..it's all made of cheap plastic. Not good for those who wears a ring..dread to think what the interior would look like in a years time. The E9x interior are better made.

With regards to the looks, I'm sure it will grow on people in time.

I agree with you 100%, it is a major step back.

I agree that the looks can grow on some people but the quality feel of the interior is never going to improve no matter how long you wait.

I sat in one last week, the screen they have stuck on the dash looks utter shite.
They also feel narrower inside due to the wider centre console and dash design.
Business Manager at the dealer said they haven't took off as well as they had hoped.

Obviously there are mixed feelings on how a new model looks and feels. Impresssions form opinions, but is the quality really less than the E9* cars?

I've looked very critically at the F30, (and spent a few hours in a 328i) and I see it on a par with the E9* models for build, fit and finish. Different of course, but modern BMW.

Would I change my E91 for an F31? In a heartbeat. BMW have moved on in the right direction, IMO, and I've been living around BMWs for 40 years.

The E39 5-series was probably the pinnacle of BMW builds, a hard act to follow. The E60 received high criticism for going down market, but did it really? There are many BMW owners who moved on and would never go back to the E39. The E60 wasn't so bad after all. Same applies to the E90, following the "perfect" E46, I say no more.

Agree with that Pete, I thought the E90 was really lacking compared to the E46 when it came out but would never go back to a E46 over an E90.

Yes, we go through this with every new generation of model. The previous one is always better. Even the plain old 'odd' looking E90, with minimalist, 'unfocused' interior, is now "somehow" the king... Most will soon forget, and the crown will move on to the F30.

I use Grassick's BMW at Perth, the owner Colin Grassick is more than the typical BMW garage owner, a true car enthusiast, so oozes BMW. Last time I was down and tried the 328i, he came out to ask my opinion of the new model. We got talking BMW (as we do), now he has been with BMW for years. He told me he has never seen one generation of a model move on so much. He's tracked some of the F30 models with BMW test drivers, and there is no doubt in his mind the F30 is one superb car.

Let's hope the leather is better quality, mines worn badly already on the bolster, still waiting for the 'regional' BMW guy to inspect it.
Had leather in my last 3 cars but this stuff in the e93 is utter shite

I am a 330i owner and I test drove a 328i f30 and was pleasently surprised.
The interior on the luxury versions is very nice. The others are awful IMHO. The exterior is not good. But as a drivers car, i will happily pick one up in 2-3 years time for less than half price. It seems the 328 is a very well thought out model , which hangs between a e90 320d and a 330i. The f30 328 goes like stink and is great to drive.

It drives well I must admit however I agree the interior isn't great. I drove a 320d EfficientDynamics and even things like the gear knob and steering wheel seem much worse quality. The steering wheel actually feels like it is covered in plastic not leather. The difference in terms of build quality to my E92 is high.

I also agree the standard leather in the E92 isn't great quality.

Don't BMW sell 90% of their E90's in M-Sport trim? If so considering the new M-Sport one is not out yet I'm not surprised sales aren't massive yet and we are not bowled over by it.

From the pics I've seen the new M-Sports look very nice!

Every new BMW gets the exact same response from owners of the previous model.

2 things are certain:

1. A BMW 3 series will ALWAYS sell in droves, sooner or later. It can't fail because fleets will buy them up regardless of what 'enthusiast' rating it gets.

and

2. More than half of us enthusiasts will end up with one sooner or later (or perhaps a differen model such as the new 5 or X) and work out how to get around the faults that it will inevitably have and then moan when a newer one is released how its a step back from the one we are in at the time.

Its been like this for every BMW I can remember back to 90's, and maybe even before

Definitely before that. E36 was no patch on the E30 when it arrived, "too radical", "those awful front lights", "poor build quality", etc., etc.

E34 after the E28 5-series, "too big", "lost the BMW edge", etc., always been the same old issue. E34 viewed by many as the best BMW ever, after the event. Ah wait a minute, that was the E39 wasn't it? ...or could it be the ......
