BMW Tyre insurance, any good? is it worth it?

Hi,
Just collected my brand new car todayand was offered a bmw tyre insurance at a discounted rate of 355 for 3 years, has anybody used the policy and do you think it is worth it? or you had any better prices?. I bridgstone tyres fitted with a treadwear rating of 140, not going to last long and maybe worth while taking the insurance? Any feedback would be much appreciated please?

I have the insurance but haven't used it .... I paid 300 for 3 years ... so you can push them a bit.

The insurance has changed from a couple of years ago after bad press - it is much simpler now and you can have the tyre on the same corner replaced more than once - it is literally a number of tyres on the car over the period ... it matters not which corner.

I think the insurance is OK for the price - it is what it says ... 'insurance'. A lot of money but you only need one puncture to pay for it in 3 years. The fact you can pay it monthly means to me at any rate that I didn't notice it coming out of my bank account.

Thanks for the reply. Do the tyre repairs have to be carried out at BMW themselves do you know?

I was offered it when I bought mine - at around about the same price of 350. Worked out for that I'd have to replace at least 2 of the runflats in 3 years to make it viable which seems pretty unlikely to me so I didnt bother.
Stick the 350 in a bank account and dont touch it. Use that if you need a new tyre.

I think you'd be pretty unlucky to have to scrap 2 tyres in a 3 year period that was due to non premature wear.
But as SO8 says above, if you can get it cheaper it may be worth it.

I was offered it for 300 in December but gave it a miss. I haven't had a puncture for years so would have to be very unlucky to make it pay, it also meant I'd be tied to RFT for another 3 years which was the real deal breaker for me.

It's where the dealer makes it money with these types of add ons. I avoided all but one, never again.

I too ummmed and ahhhhed about the tyre insurance.
The mean streak took precedence and I decided not to, although with a but of underhanded puncturing, I could have "made" on the insurance over 3 years. Not that I would have done that, of course.
Needless to say, after less than a couple of months ownership, I hit a pothole and burst 2 tyres!!
Still, it prompted the decision to go to proper non-RTF's

You have to source the tyre from BMW, and of course they aren't going to put non-RFT's on 18" rims are they!

The tyre insurance was the only thing I took when they went through the list of different 'extras' I could take. It was the only thing I could see any benefit in having. I work at a builders and in our yard it's not unheard of to end up with nails in tyres no matter how careful you tell the lads to be and how often they sweep up.

Knowing my luck I'll not have a single problem for the entire 3 years, but incase I do I only need it to happen twice to cover my outlay.

Since running BMWs and Minis on RFTs I have seen punctures increase so took it out on the 330d. 3 weeks after taking delivery, I had a puncture so down to the local BMW dealer and tyre swapped no cash changed hands and a 3mm tyre becam brand new. So not quite paid for itself yet, but I still have 18 months to run on the policy.

If you have run flats which:

a. Seem to puncture more.
b. Can't be repaired (or won't be with the insurance so will be replaced).
c. Are more expensive.

It makes sense.

Avoid at all cost!!!....especially if its from a company called Auto Protect Ltd.

They will use everything in the small print NOT to pay out!!!...from checking your "BMW" SERVICE history to which tyre you're claiming for....

Is it not your dealer who would decide if the insurance applies or do they send the tyre back to the insurer for inspection.

Also, how strict are the dealers? Do they care? For example, if the tread was getting near the legal tread limit but not past, could/would they argue that they won't put the new tyre through insurance?

I had the insurance when I bought my 325d - I used it once in the 2 years I had the policy, so it paid for itself.

The price of these tyres I personally think it's a good idea, typically 250-300 a corner it doesn't take that many mishaps to reap the reward!

A few years back I decided to save some money and have all 4 tyres replaced on my 1 series at a cheaper place in Manchester, drove over there, had the tyres fitted, and got TWO punctures on the way home, so much for the savings

Proves anything is possible...

Folks bought a new car about 1.5 years ago and were offered this insurance at 350.00.

Given that we had already pushed the price on the car down significantly (>13% discount with some further freebies thrown in like new Sat Nav Pro), the dealer was not going to move too much. I suggested that I could source the insurance from another firm for around 235.00 for 3 years, our sales person having made a call offered the insurance for 185 for 3 years so we bought it given just one claim would benefit my parents. Job done!

5 claims can be made in 3 years.

Why would the dealers care? They'll get paid by the insurance company anyway?

they'll make sure that u have full bmw service history, the tyres are well above the limit, the brand of the tyre, which corner is it, etc...

the tyre insurance company will also want some "wrk reference" order from the garage...or authorisation code before they pay out....

all claims must have an authorisation code before they can pay back...

can the 5 claims be made on the same corner? i.e if you have claimed on the right hand side front tyre....if you get get another puncture at the same "location" i.e right hand side front tyre....will they accept the claim?

Don't think so..u mite wana read the small prints...

This was the case with the early policies, but not now. They realised the nonsense in it.

If you use some non-BMW backed insurance you run the risk of problems. The product sold through BMW is fine, which is what the OP was talking about. Claiming was very simple. Drive to dealer, wheel off, e-mail photo of tyre with screw in it and report of tread depth to insurer, reply almost right away with authority to proceed, 30 mins later, drive away with new tyre. Simples.
