E92 325i Transmission issues

Hey guys,
I own a 2007 E92 325i with the steptronic auto. I've been having issues with rough shifts, specifically on light throttle application (roughly 2000-3000RPM changes). It feels like a decent thud (shunt) is coming from the transmission. My BMW dealership here in Melbourne, Australia cannot replicate the problem and hence will not do anything to fix it. I have noticed it happens more often than not on a cold engine (say within 5 mins of starting cold) but has occasionally done it while completly warmed up as well.

The dealer has applied a software update for the transmission but the issue is still there. I am not sure if this is related however i had an issue with a clacking type noise the transmission when going from P to D or vice versa, this was found to be something to do with insufficient grease to the flange area of the drive shaft??. This was repaired under a PUMA case.

My dealer says they will keep the car for a few days and continue testing to see if they can replicate the shunt. I've tried searching on the forums but can't seem to really find any relevant issues.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Yeah i have no idea if it's normal, my dealer has never suggested it is normal but they just keep telling me they cannot replicate those rough shifts. I don't even know if the car has a ZF or GM trans in it either, if i get any info or a fix ill let you know asap!

Do you mean when shifting manually? Or DS mode or D?

In D, my car shifts smoothly. In DS, not as smooth, but I rarely use it. I use manual mode a lot though, and I've found that if I'm shifting under 4000 RPM I may get a thud or jolt. If I take my foot off the accelerator briefly then shift, it will be smooth for those situations where the RPM is low. When I drive the car spiritedly however and shift above 4000K, its always smooth. Seems like that's the way the car wants to be driven I think

Thanks for the replies. I've only noticed the issue while driving in D. I understand/expect it to be rougher in both DS/M modes though. Mine actually shifts nicely when under a decent amount of throttle but it always happens when your driving it slowly/calmly.

DCG71 have you had the issue with the clacking noise? aaprently it's a common issue on the E92 325's.

Does anyone know if the E92 325's are fitted with the GM or ZF transmission?
I've read that the E90 325i has the ZF and the E92 328i has the GM

Not sure about the clacking noise, I hear a metallic ping type sound when I change between D, R, P.. To be honest, its not that loud. I notice it mainly when doing 3 point turns in the carpark of the building where I live as there seems to be more echo there.. don't notice it as much out on the street. Do you think we are talking about the same thing? Was thinking of checking with the stealer about it but almost certain they will tell me its normal, but what's new

Yeah mate it's the same issue i had and it only happens ONCE. In the sense that when you go from P to D it will do it once, then if you go from D to R it will do it once.... so any time you shift direction between forwards and backwards.

Give them a shot and tell them that you know of one fixed in Melbourne under a PUMA case. I can give you my rego, etc if they need to find my specific PUMA case.

Yeah, in my case its barely noticable. I still think I'll bring it up next time I'm at the dearer. So yeah, if you don't mind sending me your rego and any other relevant info in a PM, that would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Apologies for the late reply Iceman777, I hadn't noticed that there was a reply to the thread until now.

I had my whole transmission swapped out for a complete new unit by my dealer and the sound actually disappeared for a little while but it returned quite quickly. BMW says the sound is being caused by a small amount of slack in the drive line and it won't harm anything.

I've now done over 100,000km with my car and it's still going strong. The clunking noise is still there as described in the posts above and i still get the occasional rough shift but I've had my car checked over by an independent dealer too and they say that it isn't anything to worry about.

I hope this helps
