Heatshield and 3" Downpipes

Have any of you had issues with your aftermarket downpipes rubbing up on the heatshield?

I have been noticing this weird sound coming from the passenger side while driving. I always assumed it was wastegate rattle but I had my doubts because It sounded different than the common wastegate rattle.

I had the car lifted and noticed my AR downpipes were touching the heatshield. Obviously when driving, they must be whats causing that metal on metal sound. Theres even marks on the heatshield from the downpipes.

Have any of you removed the heatshield completely?

The noise is driving me crazy.

Yep, there is only a tiny amount of room to align the pipes millimeters actually. Rotate one way hit the other pipe rotate the other way hit the heat shield of the engine mount. I had the same noise first install, I ended up removing the heat shield and flattening the part that the pipe was hitting in a vice reinstalled the heat shield.

Is it safe to run without the heatshield? Is it a necessity to have it?

That I'm not sure, I was definitely tempted but figured the engineers stuck it there for a reason. My thought would be it would lead to a shorter life of the mount not having the shield in place. If you flatten the area where you see the contact scratches from the pipe you should be ok.

I just had this problem. We used a crowbar to push the heat shield away as much as possible. No more sound now.

Send a message via AIM to Jeff@TopGearSolutions
Just bend the heat shield out of the way.

I just bent mine with a big flat screwdriver when installing the catted dp's to give it a little clearance and have never had any noise from it.

I have some woofers in the back and they have rattled the heat shield so bad that it corroded/bent around the big washers holding the HS in place. Now it rattles ridiculously. I might just have to get some bigger washers.
