New Turbos

I just got new turbos under CPO because of the waste gate rattle. My question is, how long is the break in period for these turbos, if their is one at all?

I'm not sure. I would have just asked the dealer when I picked it up though

Is your car under warranty? is the waste gate rattle something that the dealer will replace for out of warranty cars?

I would say a couple thousand miles don't put stress on them?

My car just hit 39k and it is under CPO warranty until the middle of next year (April or May.) The rattle was just getting out of control so I took it in and the kept it for 5 days, gave me a rental, and swapped out both turbos. Ended up paying 50 buck versus the invoice of over 5K. I was delighted as you guys could imagine. The SA told me that If I didn't have a warranty and didn't want to pay the premium, I could have easily driven on it for another 50k miles, but since I'm CPO'd I just wanted it done now because of how annoying it was... It literally sounded like a damn lawn mower. I also noticed that it builds boost a little bit faster and their is a noticeable amount of turbo lag reduced. I am happy I got this now!

On to the original question, I did ask the SA about the break in period on the turbos when I took it in for service last week, and he told me that he doesn't think their is one but he will find out for me. I forgot to ask him when I picked it up today and couldn't call back because they closed. So I am pretty sure that their isn't one, but I want to be safe with the car.

Hey Bavarian,

I am pretty much going through exactly the same scenario as you. One thing I'm concerned about is when I get my car back that there will be "turbo lag".

Can someone explain what this is and whether these "software updates" have been fixed so that no lag occurs?

at what rpm should my turbo kick in anyway?

Thanks

BMW set up the N54 with the twin-turbos so it would be lag-free. If you're replacing the OEM turbos with new OEM turbos, there should be no lag. Your turbos should kick in instantly on stock boost (~8 psi), if you're running low boost (12-14 psi) mine usually kick in 1,200 RPMS.

Same here...mine actually went to the shop yesterday morning and they're supposedly working on it today since they had to overnight the turbos. Mine had that "marbles in a tin can" sound and it was horrendous so I took mine in for the same thing and they said they're replacing it with new turbos and I was wondering exactly what you are about the break in period and whether or not there will be lag. I'm so excited to have a new pair of turbos in my ride, can't wait to drive it now!

Break in is not required for turbos... Enjoy your car

Yep...Had both my turbos, oil lines, vanos noids, and other misc parts replaced free of charge via CPO warranty...Babied it for a few days to ensure that everything was error free...then boosted it to 18lbs via 5.18 alpha firmware.

It rips hard.
