Idler Pulley.... ?
I have a woooing sound coming from my front end above 1500rpm, and the dealer is telling me it is probably an idler pulley of some sort and that they will have to replace to tensioner as well.
I don't have a quote yet because the car doesn't go in for a week. That's just what they told me when I was in the service bay letting them hear the sound. Based upon that sketchy information, has anyone else had any similar experience? If so, what was the problem and how much did it cost? I want to make sure I am well informed going into this so that I don't get ripped. ![]() The car is a 2007 328xi with 60k. |

I have a sound also when i accelerate, sounds like a air leak. I just bought the parts (tensioner/with new bolt & idler pulley + belt) from autohausaz.com and will DIY. Parts were $113 shipped.
I'm pretty sure its one of the pulleys since the sound only occur during acceleration and it does sound like a bad baring.

lolFrom the picture provided it appears that the tensioner and pulley are the only things wrong with mine. I think the idler pulley is fine. I was under the impression that the idler pulley was the pulley at the tensioner. I don't think my idler pulley is the problem, just the tensioner and tension pulley. Sounds like I need to replace those. The dealer left me with the impression that it wasn't an easy fix. Look like a super easy DIY. ![]() Last edited by WOT Bimmer; 04-23-2013 at 09:26 PM. |

you want to replace everything since you're at it....the other one will eventually go bad
yea, its around 1500 and it gets louder as rpm increase...1500 to 3200 rpm is where the sound kicks in

Thank you all for the help! I was really concerned that this was going to be a wallet breaker (and rightly so if I took it to the dealer). It's nice to know so much of this stuff is a simple DIY.

May not hurt to get a new tensioner bolt while you're at it. Mine broke, and the tensioner came out off alignment.
Bought new Tensioner assy. and deflection pulley, few hundred from BMW. Easy (30 minute) DIY |

I actually got my tensioner and bolt from autohausaz for about $75. Turned out the tensioner was okay and it was actually my oil filter that was making the sound.
