How do I properly remove the JB4?

Hey guys, i have seen some threads how some people have removed their JB4 before going in to the dealer for service. And the dealer found some codes and flaged/voided the warrenty on those cars.

So the reason why I am making this thread is because there is no thread/guide to how your properly supposed to remove the JB4.

Do you plug in the USB, clear and delete the codes? Then lock the doors and remove it?

I just need to get a simple oil change. But I still want to remove it. Rather be safe than sorry.

I've read here that for simple oil changes, no one is going to check for warranty-voiding tunes like JB4.

But then, I know a BMW tech who said most guys at the shop will take a peak at most 335i's innards to see what's been done. He called it professional curiosity.

In the german forum there is a guy that works for BMW Tech in Münich, he said that you can not hide anything... If they plug your car in the BMW network and you did something that changes any of your standard perimeters, your flagged

He seems to say the thruth... But you never know... I believe him until somebody proves he's wrong...

If you can manage it, just change the oil and filter yourself and keep the receipt.

That is what I did on my former 2007 335i. I would never leave the tune in with the possibility of losing my warranty. It sounds like the process you describe is correct.

How can they read codes or shadow codes if jb4 auto clears all codes?

The car has a history of codes thrown even if they were cleared.
This is never used though and jb4 or procede dont usualy throw any tuner codes, so even if they see codes, they arent warranty voiding codes.

My personnal opinion and that what i believe:

BMW can always see if you have/had a tune (incl. JB&Co).

The only thing i'm not sure is if they are watching...

well then they dont do a good job enforcing it seeing as many people have gotten turbo replacements after being tuned.

With a piggy like the JB4 the ECU never sees values other then stock like. As for removing. Clear the codes if any from the steering wheel, turn off power, lock the doors and remove the JB4.

Enjoy a much slower driver to the dealer

Just a quick FYI. I just had my oil changed in a NY dealer. I left my jb4 in and just deleted any codes and set to map 0. There were no issues.

Btw I also have a catless dp in.

Mike, my apologies if this is a stupid question, but what's the significance of "locking the doors" in this process, before removing the JB4?

If I'm not mistaken it's so the car's ECU goes into sleep mode. For example, if you have your seat heaters on and you turn off the car. If you start it back up in 10 min or less the seat heaters will still be on. But if you start it after 10 min, they won't.

You think the argument here is about oil changes? No one will give a crap about warranty until something goes wrong, at which point modders will try to hide what they've done and BMW will try to get out of paying for it.

I'm not doubting you sir, and I'm onboard with the ECU going to sleep being a required part of the process, but the ECU will go to sleep after 10 minutes whether the doors where locked or not, correct?

That I am not 100% sure about....maybe. Maybe locking the doors makes it go to sleep faster...???

Make it easier for yourself, unhook battery, remove tune and reconnect battery.
