JB 4 install. Disconnect battery?

Hi,

I have a new JB4 to install and have read the install instructions and watched the video on the BMS website.

The video ( granted the later part is for the N54) tells you to close the trunk and lock the doors before starting the install.

However the text in the instructions tell you to disconnect the battery. Which is correct?

How can you lock the doors with the remote once the battery is disconnected?

I locked doors left trunk open (edit: with disconnected battery) no problems, other times I didn't even lock the doors, just disconnected battery and just give it 5-10 mins.

Definitely disconnect the battery! You will be monkeying around inside the ECU box and any static electricity may fry something. I don't recall anything special with locking the doors, but leave the trunk open and the battery disconnected.

thank you all - done.. Honesty the instructions need to be updated for an 335 N55

The PDF pictures don't match the car and the video clearly mentions locking the door, which BTW we are pointed to for a general overview.

I was thinking about making a new video for this myself, maybe I will once I get the extra wires for my JB4.

Once you lock the car, it takes 10 mins to power off all systems. If you want to make sure, you can disconnect the battery. However, I have installed and removed the JB4 3 or 4 times and not once did I disconnect the battery. I had no problems. Disconnecting the battery is not necessary but if it makes you feel better, then do it.

The pdf for the harness b install says to disconnect battery as opposed to other versions which give option to wait for ecu to sleep.

I have harness B. I never disconnected the battery for JB4 install or uninstall. I never even waited the 10 mins - once I locked the car, I just started taking the engine cover off and unbolting stuff (which takes a few minutes). Nothing bad happened. I removed JB4 for Vanos bolt recall and then reinstalled after that. Never disconnected the battery.

after contacting Mike - he confirms . As for "Static" (see ^^^) there is no ECU in the white box anymore.

Just make sure you don't close the trunk after pulling the battery, did this and took a while to get it back open as we don't have a keyhole anymore on some versions for the trunk.

I had to roll mine down the driveway and fight to turn it so that I could get someone next to me to provide power so I could open the trunk from under the hood there is a power terminal to jump it from.
