Personal Property Tax Time!

Undoubtedly, the most fun time of the year is getting your personal property tax for your vehicle! Just curious as to what others are getting lit up for.

Arlington County here - $1,118. Car is valued at $29,800

Seems low, but I guess the lower the value, the lower the property tax - so I can't complain all that much.

For $29k, that $1k+ seems high! I haven't gotten mine in the mail yet, but I know it's coming.

Gotta love VA. Home of many taxes but radar detectors not legal. We get ours at the end of the year. Great present for Christmas from the city/state.

Mine was like $600 when the car value at $28000 but i gave the people a call about the tax reduce stuff, ended up paying $360.
So $1000+ is def way too much.

Maybe he means 1k for the entire year I'm assuming. Since I have a 2003 E46 M3 my property tax is like $150 or $300 per year.

Yes, it's for the entire year - I initially thought it was high, but I double checked the math and I think it's correct. Pretty sure that neighboring counties (Fairfax, Alexandria) have a flat tax rate, which means it would be even more expensive in those areas.

The different counties do have different rates. I was paying more in Loudoun county than Fairfax county, for example. Mine was $600~ for the year last year on the 335.

I got a bill for $388, but I no longer live in Arlington County. I updated my address to Fairfax County, and they sent me the bill again...

My FFX County 2012 bill: 2011 128i = $637. 2008 328i Coupe = $431. That's a lot more than I paid last year; rates must have gone up.

Can I ask how much the vehicles were valued at? If I'm calculating the FFX county rates correctly, it's $4.57 per $100 of assessed value. So that puts the 2011 128i at $13,938, and the 2008 328i Coupe at $9431? Either my math is wrong, or the assessed values are low?

Not sure what they are valued at, but I think the low payment is because I qualify for the Personal Property Tax Relief Act. Here is what is posted on the FFX website:

What is Personal Property Tax Relief Act?

The Personal Property Tax Relief Act of 1998 provides tax relief for passenger cars, motorcycles, and pickup or panel trucks having a registered gross weight of less than 7,501 pounds. The subsidy for delinquent car taxes from the Commonwealth of Virginia has expired for specific taxable years. For more information, view the End of Car Tax Subsidy news release.

To qualify a vehicle must

- be owned by an individual or leased by an individual under a contract requiring the individual to pay the personal property tax;

AND,

- be used 50% or less for business purposes.

Motor homes, trailers and farm use vehicles do not qualify for tax relief.

Does your vehicle qualify for Car Tax Relief?

If you can answer YES to any of the following questions, your motor vehicle is considered by State Law to have a business use and does NOT qualify for Car Tax Relief.

- Is more than 50% of the mileage for the year used as a business expense for Federal Income Tax purposes OR reimbursed by an employer?

- Is more than 50% of the depreciation associated with the vehicle deducted as a business expense for Federal Income Tax purposes?

- Is the cost of the vehicle expensed pursuant to Section 179 of the Internal Revenue Service Code?

- Is the vehicle leased by an individual and the leasing company pays the tax without reimbursement from the individual?

Damn, why is mine so much higher than some of you? My bill says its normally $16XX, but I have ~$500 off due to the Personal Tax Relief, coming out to ~$11XX. Car is a 2011 335i, and the price is for the year.

I guess because its a 2011 and the depreciation is lower? I'm in Fairfax, btw.

It's based on the value of your car, so it's always going to lower year over year. Sounds about right to me.

Sooooo instead of paying a tax when registering, you all have to pay a tax every year? Remind me to not move there

What sucks is that in Loudoun they say the assessment of the car is based on N.A.D.A's "clean loan value" but when you use NADA's assessment tool they don't publish that particular value. I assume this value falls between trade in and retail but it's shady that I have to search for it.

So much for transparency I guess. .
