I agree, well sort of. I've driving manuals for over 10 years(All BMWs) and while its fun to drive and more engaging autoboxes have made significant advances in this period. I recently drove an F30 328i with the 8 speed box and i walked away highly impressed. I could definitely see myself living with that auto day in and day out. It was fast, smooth, and economical, my only gripe was that i experienced a minor pause during an acceleration run(not sure if it was lag or what). Still as I get older I have some days i don't feel like shifting of course those days are very few. I think it would just be better to have 2 cars, a manual and an auto.

Is it just me or is both "reverse" gear and "7th" gear on the same place as neutral.

With this transmission, going to 7th gear is like pushing the shifter from 6th to neutral. So cruising on neutral won't happen since you'll always be on the "7th" gear.

But why though? The 6MT in my 135 works great. Just because newer technology like the DCT exists, doesn't mean we have to accept it as our only option (it seems that manufacturers would prefer that we do though) I'll agree that shifting with paddles of a DCT while on a track will be quicker and more consistent, it still doesn't offer the same engagement or enjoyment that some of us still prefer with a traditional manual.

I've read various stories of some DCTs refusing to shift out of park or use all of the available gears. Those are problems you won't typically encounter with a traditional manual. Reverse is far left. 7th is far right. Neutral will be simply in the middle.

I would bet that BMW would be more than smart enough that shorts are able to be located, and the failsafe mode would allow you to shift into any gear possible.

I highly doubt that an electrical system implemented in one of the most important parts of the mechanics of the car will be inhibited by a simple short in a circuit.

that's because you don't think the right way.

the end goal is fun, not always necessarily BIGGER FASTER COOLER.

that is why you'll always find some who enjoy machines which minimize the amount of technology and maximize the amount of connectedness one feels when driving (i cringe when i hear of pandora, apps, email, texting in a car... i just want to row thru the gears!).

Hopefully they just make a 7-speed manual and leave it at that. All this other BS is just another reason to go ahead and give up and buy an auto.

I've yet to drive an automatic that I prefer to a manual, and I've driven the best autos available. They're still not as good at knowing what you want as you are, and without a direct link to your brain stem, they never will be.

It's great news that BMW is continuing it's research on manuals but I don't see the point in option 2 as others have mentioned. Without the clutch, what is the point of having a manual shift lever. Just doesn't make sense

Very interesting article!

This past week my best friend (he drives and rebuilds Corvettes, has 3 of them besides other cars) from out west came to see us. We been planning a trip to Bowling Green, Kentucky for the past 2 years and finally did it. We had a super time at both the Henry Ford Museum and then the VIP Corvette Factory and Museum Tour in Bowling Green.

Anyway, when he drove my M3 (a M-DCT) and was cursing at 125 KM/Hr (77.7 MPH) near 2,800 RPM he mentioned ...

"This is a great car I love it, it could use another gear"

My friend is a mehanic and a great one at that (having taken cars apart as well as engines then rebuild them like new), I found what he said quite interesting coming from a Corvette lover. Also, it seams to agree with this article somewhat. Perhaps there will be more gears in the future. I like my M-DCT and not realy miss my former MT M3's

PS. Sometime soon I shall add a link to photos we took during our visit to the candy stores (factories and museums ~ as well to the local car show here in London, Ontario known as the Country Cruse Extravaganza ---> Click for a taste here

BTW .... we averaged near 30 MPG on our 2000 KM (1,243 Mile) roundtrip, it sure surprised little old me something to be said for this ///M3 mostly expressway driving.

The whole point of going to the track on the weekend is to have "fun". For many a manual is definitely more engaging and fun to drive.

I like the first idea, and actually I'm surprised it's taken this long to develop a shifter that blocked potential money shifts.

As for the second idea, that sounds kind of like the 370Z's automatic rev-match feature, minus the clutch. While I see the benefit of the Z's system on track, I think it would take a lot of fun out of the experience on the street since part of the fun is aiming for that perfectly smooth shift every time and the sense of accomplishment each time you nail it just right. With that second BMW system, they might as well just make a DCT with individual selectors for each gear on the shifter and keep the up/down paddles on the steering wheel. Sounds like it'd be basically the same thing functionally.
