N57 engine rattle on start up....

My E90 330d SE LCI has the N57 engine, which is a bit "rattley" from cold or warm, for the first couple of miles driving. Nothing too bad, and when fully warm its very quiet.
Is this normal for the N57? My previous 330d had the M57 engine, which was quiet from start-up.
The noise is difficult to describe, only that its a bit "tappity".
The car has done 16k miles now, and has always sounded as it does now, from buying it at 10k.

yep, mines the same. can't quite describe the noise but I know the one you mean. sounds horrible on really light throttle and goes as soon as you add more pressure to the go pedal?

My 330d also sounds the same, if you want to hear a really horrible noise lift the oil filler cap for a few seconds, sounds like a metal bucket full of stones.
Dealer says they all sound like that !

I have asked the question now to not only my dealer but also a engineering company in the know.

In their own words,

"The BMW short block 6 cylinder diesel is a very good engine, but loud. Most of the noise is the fuelling system and related to the very high pressure it operates at".

Not my words, just repeating what they said. Which does not answer why the Audi V6 diesel is so whisper quite.

Yep it's diesel knock Baz, just the way the fuel system is set up and working. Our new trucks make the exact same noise, the drivers were all for dropping them into the workshops but I told them it was just diesel knock, it's normal.
