335i vs 335is

Hello. New to forum but have been a visitor numerous times. Have a 2001 330i sedan with sport. Have looked at and driven a 2012 335i with M Sport but haven't had the chance to drive a 3351s. Looking at the information here, talking with sales guy and going through the web, seems the only major difference is the HP/Torque. I know there are cosmetic differences etc. Is the $7K difference in price worth it when you can get a Dinan tune with the oil cooler for around $3K? Maybe I am missing some of the fine print but cannot see what the price difference is getting me besides the HP increase and some cosmetic things. Thanks for any input and enlightenment. Its appreciated!

It's really just a matter of trim. Was worth it to me as I hardly had to mod the car cosmetically to get the look I was going for. Performance on the other hand was something else.

Small cosmetic differences (if you get msport hardly any), BMW PPK and PE included. Small differences, huge marketing gimick. You could basiclally get a 335i and make it an iS for 5k less

if you're into auto, you do get the DCT with the 335is. To each, his own - but the 335i with a tune is much more than I'll ever need. I'd quicker use that extra money and get a used 1M with low miles instead.

HP/Torque is different and remember u get DCT too which is really good and u dont get that in a 335i, unless u are going with the 6MT with both but is up to u on which car u want

The cosmetic/trim differences between the two models should not be relevant in your decision making progress.

It really comes down to the power train. N54 vs. N55 engine, 7-speed DCT transmission over the standard 6-speed auto. Both models can be had with the 6-speed manual gearbox.

IMO, if you want a 6-speed manual, only consider the 335is if you are dead set on the N54 engine. Otherwise, go for the 335i.

To me, the DCT transmission coupled with the N54 engine made the 335is more appealing than any 335i (N54 or N55).

Thanks to all for the replies. The N54 is certainly favored as Dinan says the N55 is tuner friendly. I also like the DCT but still debating this but leaning towards it. Definately don't want the new 335i's. Drove one a sedan-don't like it! For some reason the sales person I spoke with said the 2012 335is will not be produced with the N54 after 2012, the 2013 model wll be with the F. Either wants a sale now or doesn't know whats up. Thanks again to all.

just remember that there are some built in cooling mods too that the 335i's don't have.

I just got a 335is and I absolutely love it. IMO having the N54 and the DCT together is worth the 7k difference not to mention the nicer body style on the 335is.

The difference isn't really $7K. If you compare a 335i M-sport to an equally optioned 335is, it's more like $4K to $4.5K difference.

For that amount, you get the N54 motor with overboost, cooling upgrades, very nice touches that the M-sport doesn't have like the 313 rims, the rear diffuser, cooling upgrades, unique hexagon interior trim, etc.

There's a reason why the BMW 1M has a N54 motor instead of an N55.

Web you look at the extra you get on th 335is, msport bumpers, cool black mirrors, possibility of dct and the the overboost function, 19 inch wheels. I think you get a lot for the extra money. If you plan to buy the car, it's MUCH more exclusive.

If you're gonna equip your 335i with m-sport and get the PPK plus the PE... No question to me the 335is is the way to go. If you're going auto, well then it is obvious DCT is a better option.

I have a 335i. ONLY cause I need xdrive I live in the north.

Biggest difference are the engines N54 for the IS and N55 for the regular. The power on a regular coupe can be matched, practically, if you get the PPK upgrade. That'll give you all the bonus HP/tourque. As from people whining about single vs. twin turbo, the N55 has a sophisticated, twin-scroll single turbo, not just a single turbo. It won't be as good for tuning options, but it's more reliable and more efficient. That's really the main difference other than the cosmetics and the DCT transmission in the IS.

The 335is is more rare and more exclusive, as people mentioned, and if you're planning to get upgrades for a regular 335i, then might as well just go with the 335iS right off the bat and solve all the business and stupid dealerships later. I would personally love to have an iS if I could.

I just traded in my 2011 E90 N55 for a 2012 E92 335IS N54 2 days ago. It was worth it...
