AWD + Winter Tires = Fun

Its that time again!

We've been getting lots of snow lately, about 2hrs West of Toronto, Canada.

I drive about 45kms to work each way and use back roads (open roads) a lot, so needless to say the roads are not always clear/plowed.

Having AWD and Winter Tires just makes its very easy drive and when roads are empty fun to take corners fast or if I see an open lot do some donuts!

So far I've never gotten stuck (yet)!

Saw lots of cars/SUV/pick up trucks in the ditch or side of the highway, I am about 99.9% sure those they do not have winter tires! I don't feel sorry for those people, I just hope others didn't get hurt. Of course you get some a$$holes who don't know the limit with winter tires.

I am not saying that AWD+Winter Tires will NEVER slip but it will grip. Esp if you compare it to summer tires and all seasons, people that say its very good is BS! I've driven summer tires and all seasons in an AWD and I can say it doesn't come close!

Of course all cars regardless if its AWD, FWD and RWD they all benefit from winter tires its just AWD will be better.

The AWD is great for accelleration but I find myself taking it easy around corners as my car tends to plow more than I expected. My first snow covered corner last year really woke me up when I tagged a snow bank...not what I was expecting. Do you drive with DTC on?

Get snow tires. Problem solved. Can't expect no-seasons to work well just because you have awd

I ran all seasons last winter and got in a fender bender when I couldn't stop in time - the lady in front of me did a needless panic-brake and spun out blocking both lanes. I glanced off her and ended up in the ditch.

So this year I got snow tires, and on our first snowy day last week it felt markedly more controlled.

AWD helps you get going, but winter tires make it so much better when it comes to stopping/steering!

I've been holding out on switching to my winter tires because I like summer tire rims better

When driving "normal" I leave DTC/DSC on, but if I am playing I take them off.

Going hard on corners you still slip though, make sure you still accelerate though cause it will straighten then car. When you do start slipping on corners you can still control the car (depends how hard).
Then again not much you can do when its icy, unless you have studs.

I have been driving with DTC one push during the last snow falls and it def helps. Wish the JB4 could do the one push DTC for the XI. Is there any draw backs to always having DTC on? more wear on rear brakes? I do disable DSC if the roads are dry and I'm doing logs.

I had a bad experience this last January while driving without DSC/DTC. I fishtailed my passenger side rear wheel into a curb at 10-15mph. Initially, I didn't think anything of it because the impact felt minimal. However, driving off the car would not track straight and the steering wheel was off by 90 degrees. Upon inspection, the rear wheel was noticeably cambered in. Ended up having to replace the rear subframe and other misc suspension parts.

You could say that I underestimated the effectiveness of DSC/DTC in the snow.

ya I would leave DSC on in the snow unless there is lots of real estate to play with like an open parking lot.

Yes snows are fun! I was debating a/s but I'm so glad i didn't... Blizzaks for the win!! Always fun beasting through the snow

I run Dunlop ICE touch 225/45 17 on my e91 330XD and I do have to say that No problems stopping even on ICY roads which we often here i Finland.

The differences in tires is also Huge between the cheap ones and premium like
Nokian,Continental,Goodyear and so on.

Here is a test they do every year in Finland
The first 13 are studded and the other 12 are nonstud(or frictions as we call them)

Ya I spent some time in Kokkola Finland and the rental car had studded tires. All the roads were pure ice as the sun never really came up lol. First time I have seen studs as a necessity.

I second that. AWD with snows is great to get rolling and much better when stopping. But, you still need to think about stopping a little sooner than in the dry summer conditions.

Not all snow tires are created equal. I've had a few different sets over the years. Some are good and some are so so. The statement AWD + snows = fun is kind of generalized. Assuming if you have some nice blizzaks I would totally aggree. However, some tires just suck.

When I bought my bimmer about 3 months ago, I asked the dealer to put on brand new snow tires since it was a CPO and all-seanons on it were done and I was planning to get summer wheels anyway. So they put Conti TS810 snows on. And they work pretty well on dry pavement, quiet, decent dry grip for a winter tire, kinda hard being a run flat of course. So I was relatively happy until the first snow storm. These things provide little to no confidence on snow packed road. Stopping the car is dangerously slippery as I cannot feel the tires grip as a winter tire should at all. Taking turns is also far from what I would expect from decent winter rubber.

So there you go AWD+winter tires could be fun if done properly but it all depends on the "shoes" you're wearing. I've had much better and at cheaper price too. In fact I am planning to call Continental and see if they can do anything about it because these TS810s are not really safe.
