AA Tune MPG Gains

AA claims MPG gains with their tune. Can I get some feedback from current owners on this? I've got xDrive and so I wouldn't mind a bit of mpg gain on the gas guzzler.

I'm inclined to say no.

Before my tune, I did a careful measure of highway mpg (specific road course, air conditioner settings, car on cruise control). Made several runs. After the tune, did the same. No difference.

Maybe there's some gain at a specific rpm range...but then again you may drive your car a little more aggressively with the better throttle response. Anyway, I doubt you will see a gain.

I do like the AA tune, no regrets.

I noticed a gain in mine. Not necessarily on the MPG gauge while driving but on how many miles I am able to get per tank.

My driving is mostly city and before my tune I was getting around 260 miles per tank. With my tune I now get between 280 and 300, depending how I have been driving.

I track MPGs religiously using the actual calculations, not by relying on the onboard computer or anything else. Before the tune: 22.3 mpg in mixed driving, after the tune: 23.1 mpg in mixed driving. Basically, the tune will pay for itself in a little over 5 years

I can't say that I'd notice a 1 mpg increase as I mostly only check at fill-ups. I don't do averages over time. I haven't seen anything to indicate a decrease from the tune though.

I've seen a mileage improvement with my AA tune and BMW PE.

The problem is after you get the tune you will have a more aggressive throttle, so initially you will probably see worse fuel economy because you you will be "gunning" it more. I do feel that if you somehow negated the more agressive throttle you would see the same if not SLIGHTLY better economy after the tune.

The main point is this, you shouldn't be buying the tune for the promise of saving gas. You buy it for the throttle remap and slight boost in power.

I did the Active Autowerke stage 2 tune with charcoal filter delete with high flow filter and signature exhaust. I notice about 1-2 mpg more on the highway at about 80-90 mph. I have a 40 mi commute. but overall increase in MPG is about 1 mpg.

AA

For those who got the AA,

Did you guys notice any HP gain? or do you think it's just the throttle? And is it really worth spending $700+ on the AA?

I've seen a few dyno results and there's a definite increase in power and torque. You'll mostly see people quoting the max HP/TQ increase. What really matters is the increase in the overall area under the torque curve. There are gains throughout the rpm range. Both that and increased throttle response make the change feel larger than the numbers would seem to show.

It's expensive for sure and these cars are still fun to drive without it. That said in my opinion it's the best N/A mod for the money. You'll notice it and appreciate it every time you drive your car. I also plan on keeping my 3er for a long time and figured the chance of a related warranty issue is very small. That's how I justified it at least.

As others have said, you won't really notice the full impact until you drive around 500 miles. Seriously, the first time I got the tune installed I barely noticed a difference and was a little disappointed. It's totally different now.

Going back to gas milage, I did hit 35 MPG on the trip computer on a 55 mile trip that was 90% highway. I was being very careful, but if the tune really reduced milage, I shouldn't have been able to do that. The crazy thing was that I was at 36 MPG when I exited the highway and it was still going up, albeit very slowly at that point.

Sounds like you all have had a good experience with the AA tune. I'm not buying it for the gas conservation, I was just curious to see if their claims held up. I would have expected a decrease in mpg to be honest. Good to hear all of the happy responses. Looks like I will be purchasing it soon.

Between the tune and the stupid scoops I gained about 2 MPG on average.

can't say I gained any mpg at all on my car after I got the tune. but I did gain more than 30hp with the tune+3-stage intake manifold, so I really can not complain.
