JB4 emissions question

random thought.

if my car was accidentally de catted, would running the non turbo map (map 8?) get it thru an mot emissions test?

hypothetically......

The emissions test is not a problem. Mine passed fine with no primary cats.

its the new visual inspection that is more of a worry.

I'd certainly verge on the side of 'unlikely' myself.

Like Phil I am worried about just the visual check on the DP's to be honest. First MOT is September, DP's go on in a few weeks - I've been thinking I could delay until after the MOT.

Mine went through it's MOT just over a week ago and the guy didn't even bother looking at the exhaust, listened for leaks, bunged the sensor in and did the emissions test. Currently don't have DP's on but just wanted to see what he was inspecting. Guess it just depends on the tester at the end of the day.

I spoke to the guy at my first mot in Jan. I explained I would be fitting hi flow cat dps (a lie, but no one will know if they have cats in or not). He correctly said that the absence of emission warnings would show all was ok!

He said that as long as it is all in good order and passes the gas test (which hasn't changed since about 1992) then its fine.

All depends how much effort they put in to checking it - its a risk is all.

I doubt the car would pass emissions without secondary CATS. I was keen to ensure my secondary CATS were at full operating temperature when they tested it last year..

My DPs are getting rusty and dirty now so not so shiny and new.

I think this is what the New MOT rules say...

"Exhaust

A catalytic convertor fitted as original equipment but missing will be a reason for failure."

So if someone look hard enough, and saw you had no primary cats that could be a reason for failure...ofcourse it all depends on how hard they look, and if they realise the car originally came with primary cats.

This is the reason I'm going to have AR Donwpipes with HighFlow Cats fitted rather just Catless downpipes, since I'm planning on keeping my car for years to come, really cannot be bothered with the hassle of it all if someone does notice the lack of primary cats on a MOT inspection...

My point is they would not know whether the Dps are Catted or Decatted, they only have your word for it. A 3" pipe like that could easily contain a CAT element, and you can only see the tail ends of the DPs anyway.

Unless they are N54 experts it will just look like normal, no CEL lights, pass the BET gas test, done. Go for you test a month early, if you're really unlucky just go somewhere else, ask any independant small garage where they for for MOTs and that will be a good start

The MOT cannot stipulate the use of OE BMW parts, so aftermarket replacements have to be acceptable as long as they pass the tests - ie. gas analyser and no emissions warning lights.

If you use the BMS DP fix, then the Lambda figures from after the 'missing' Primary CATs are 'correct' so even with an OBD check the CATs appear to be there and working.

No CEL lights will be on, so again there is no way for them to check.

If it passed the gas analyser test then as far as they know it has working CATs end of.

I'm no mechanic, but below are...Stock downpipes, Catless downpipes, Highflow downpipes...the difference is between the high flow and stock aren't too much, but its pretty clear which one is the Catless version

So is the MOT man going to stop the test and go googling about N54 downpipes, happen to stumble on the AR pictures and bust you?

I think not, they have a business to run, if it is 'reasonable' for them to pass it they will.

Remember they deal with crappy rust bucket pieces of s##t all day, a nice gleaming straight 6 BM will be a treat for most, and if everything else is perfect you'll have no bother.

If you're unlucky and get a bit of a traffic warden type tester, then go somewhere else.

The front subframe and undertrays cover almost all of the downpipes so I bet only the most anal of testers would notice.

Plus one!...

HAHAHA...those numpties wouldn't even know about the engine!...last time, one of them said to me, i bet it drinks a lot with a 3.5 under the hood!

With me, when i take mine to the local MOT tester, he thinks that i must have some mods, thats why i come to him...as the other cars are just old bangers...

and its always the same question for the last 3/4 years now....

"mate, is that a sports exhaust"? "not sure if it will pass emissions tests" (obviously, hes trying to get a beer out of me)....

same answer from me...."no mate...its all standard...u passed me last year....theres only a small chip on the windscreen, that has been repaired...u know the score mate!.....i want a the same discount as last year aswell".....

But i can see why they would "check" everything especially on a current/ high end BMW!....(mainly for beer reasons...)

last year, the cheeky basterd even went for a drive down the road!!!!!.....as soon as i saw him driving off the ramps, he turned out of the garage and went down the road!!!...i walked out to see where the hell he was going...and he must have saw me and he turned around....

he said that he went to "test" the suspension.....he said that he noticed that when braking, the front wheel would "shake"/ wobble slightly....

to be fair, he showed me....and when driving slowly and applying the brakes, the front wheel did "tremble"/ shake slightly....not noticeable when driving..... u can only see it from the outside....i tried to replicate the same (with my brother watching)....but couldn't....so maybe he was "pumping" the brake pedal in some way or another....he said that it cud be a suspension bushing or something like that....

Kevin,

AFAIK a road test has been a requirement of MOTs for years, they have to take it for a spin!!

Smoked - if that question is genuine, I see you're not too up on engines / turbos / exhausts and how they work?

How could running with the wastegates open change emissions in any way?

It would just make it REALLY FOOKIN loud, even louder than it would already be with no CATs.

Never happened to me before! It was always on the ramp and they give you the certificate afterwards....
