Over the past few months I have noticed an odd build up of green dirt around the seal on the TT's roof, the build up feels quite "slimy" when you run your fingers over it and is really starting to bug me.

However i'm not sure of how to clean it off without damaging the roof in someway, has anyone experienced similar issues or does anyone have any advice on how to clean it off?

Just use a proprietary fabric roof cleaner from Meguiars or something similar. Take a look on cleanyourcar.co.uk for a choice of cleaner.

Won't be a problem taking it off. There are also materials which clean and protect a fabric roof as well. Should stop a repeat of this.

In my opinion, you won't go far wrong with the Autoglym cabriolet maintenance kit. It includes both the cleaner and the protector and is available from Halfords.

If you wanted some protector which would last longer, I1 from gtechniq would be my recommendation

dilute some household bleach and use a nail brush to go around the edges.do this a couple of times washing off with clean warm water inbetween,until its all gone this will kill all the spores that create mould/algea.

Won't bleach damage the roof?

Bleach is basically a very strong oxidising agent, which is why it is so effective against micro-organisms. The problem with using bleach on fabrics like a cabriolet softtop is that a certain amount of the bleach will soak into the fibres of the roof and remain behind after rinsing. Once the water used to dilute the bleach evapourates, the chlorinated compounds will continue to oxidise the fibres and colours used in the roof fabric. For this reason I would avoid the combination of absorbant surface and any cleaning agent based on chlorine.

BMW make a very effective Cabriolet roof cleaning kit, which comprises a spray on cleaner and reproofer. Use outside only but avoid bright sunlight and breathing in any reproofer. Waterproof lungs don't work very well!
