TV buying advice

I've finally decided to buy a TV.

I want something big, i.e 42 or above.

Image quality is very very very important so will be looking at HD or any new technology available 3D, plasma, led, lcd etc (Don't what else is out there, only started researching today).

One of those where you can plug in your USB stick and play downloaded movies etc.

I want one which is reliable, no known issues like the 335i....

and also, any good online retailer you guys recommend.

All comments welcome!

You have just opened a can of worms, expect a swing of opinion from those who can't see past Plasma and those who prefer LED.

For my 2p worth I went for a 46" Samsung LED Smart TV, pic quality is fantastic and often commented on by visitors. Doesn't heat up my lounge like a plasma which is a bonus. Model is UE46D6530, now replaced with updated models but similar functions, cost me 900. The biggest bonus for me is how neat the box is, the screen has virtually no surround therefore although its a 46" screen its no bigger than most 42" models.

thanks for the comment. I'd tend to go for LG or Samsung...

900!!!...bit over the budget...

maximum I would spend is 750.

You would get the 40" Samsung for your budget or if you drop some of the Smart features. Mine has inbuilt Wifi etc also its a 3D model, too be honest these features are rarely used but I wanted to future proof as much as possible. Dropping these features will put a 46" well into your budget.

AVforums and other websites have good reviews, just Google the set name followed by review and you will find some easy.

Im all about form, so i got the samsung 55d8000 3d led. Cant get enough of the thin edge, it looks just as good when the tv is off lol. I cannot complain about picture quality and the active 3d technology...its soooo dam clear! so i guess it performs as well.

I've had both tech a few times now - if you're picky about image quality/uniformity/blacks etc - get a plasma.

Are they any TV's out there with a decent sound?
Seems we are pushed down buying additional surround sound systems as the standard TV speakers are so crap these days

best to go look at one before you make any decision..i bought a samsung lcd 40'' a few years back and i hated it..reason is that i am used to plasma and think lcd white is too bright thus it hurts my eyes even with the settings all change i was never happy with it. got myself a LG 55inch plasma i really love it!!

Kev - have a word with Paul Wafer (Wafik) he's got a mate with two 55" LG 3D panels, not sure of the money though. Could be worth an ask.

And Kev, keep an eye out on Hotukdeals for deals on TVs, getting one from John Lewis will get you a 5 year warranty too. Think Marks and Spencers do the 5 year warranty as well.

Big headache

Be careful to check out your reaction to 3D before going ahead. A lot of people get headaches when watching 3D. Personally it makes me lightheaded after about 10 minutes and takes me about 30 minutes to recover.

The reason may have to do with the amount of processing your brain needs to do and the number of adjustments your eyes need to make when the point of convergance of the eyes does not match the point of focus.
When you focus on something close, your eyes swivel inward to adjust the angle of image convergance. In 3D the image and convergance points are physically the same, but perceptually different, which seems to cause some people major problems. This perceived discrepancy between point of focus and convergance causes nausea, headachaches and dizziness in a fairly large percentage of viewers.
