You really need to get a basic understanding of stereo electronics if you are going to put your own system together. The impedance of the sub (2 ohm or 4 ohm) indicates the amount of electrical resistance. Lower is more efficient (louder), but you need to make sure your amplifier can handle a low impedance load. If your sub amp can handle 2 ohms, then I suggest buying the 4 ohm subs and using this wiring set up:

I installed the Earthquake subs in my E92 and am very happy with the increased bass. The bass is not as deep as having 10" or 12" subs in a box, but it is clean and hidden so I am satisfied. I talked about the install process in this thread, but your car is an earlier model so you should be able to follow the very detailed instructions in the next two threads:

I bought the spacers from jsherri and recommend you do so.

Finally, since you have an E90, you have more space in your doors than I do (E92) so you have more options for replacing your door speakers.

Good luck!

I did the installation myself so I don't have a shop to recommend. I agree that you are a bit limited in the speaker choices but you are not limited to Focal. Just do some searching in the Audio/Video forum and you will learn a lot about your choices. Here's a really good thread on speakers that fit: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=343673

I didn't change my back speakers bc it won't make that big a difference to the people sitting in front. But if you have passengers a lot then maybe you should upgrade the back speakers because the sound will not be that great compared to the front.
