Advice please (dog injuries)
My gorgeous dog was attacked last month and spent the night in a vet hospital. She is ok but it cost 1grand in vet fees.
This is covered by pet insurance BUT the vet has put on claim form "dog fight". It wasn't a dog fight. My dog loves all humans and animals and has to say hello to everyone and everything. She went up to a dog who jumped on her in a frenzied attack and bit her to which my dog fled. I am now concerned that the next years premium will go up because they classed it as a "dog fight" which is most certainly wasn't. Miswah has had a word with the vets who rekon they can't change it? Do I go down there and kick up a stink? Or what shall I do?

I don't think pet premiums are affected by claims are they?
We've made some pretty big claims for our cat (also for fighting!!) and the premiums haven't changed, other than general rate increases.

Of course not. Why would she?
Will my dog got attacked by another dog. Not the other way round. My Dog squeeled off like a pig shit scared. She is a lover not a fighter and wants To give every adult, kid or dog a sloppy kiss. A very friendly dog. Problem Is she thinks all dogs are friendly like her. She got caught out this time.

Why did you not claim off of the person who owned the dog the attacked yours?
When Dylan was attacked by a manky-looking greyhound I took him to the vets, paid the bill myself and then went round to the owners house and left with a cheque for the full amount.

As above. All dog owners have a responsibility to ensure their dogs are under control at all times. The other owner should pay for your fees and hope they don't get reported for having a dangerous dog. To answer question I don't think it affects the premium. Have claimed off my and the premium did not change.

My dog wasn't on a lead. Their dog was. Mine was purely going to say hello as she does every dog she sees. But this one was a nasty fuck and should have been muzzled.

My dog (6 month-old lab) is like yours in that he will want to say hello to everyone and everything. I always put him back on the lead whenever there's any other dog nearby just in case one is nasty.
Hope yours is on the mend OK.

Premium will go up Carl but with such a young dog I'd imagine it will be a quid a month or so. Our last cat had £6k in vet bills and the primium only went up £4 a month. I would let it worry you too much.
Hope she's alright, she a lovely dog. |

Glad to hear your dog is ok but be wary about off lead walking, technically in this situation their dog was under control of its lead and yours wasn't and walked into trouble. For sure though their dog should not be allowed to react as it did but they could argue all sorts that it felt threatened etc.
I always walk on a lead especially as the Dangerous Dogs act has been amended to say that anyone feeling threatened by a dog can make a complaint thus an incident does not even have to have happened and if your dog is off lead it would severly weaken any defence you tried to make. |

Same could be said for car insurance; people paying £300/year to cover a £40k payout in the event of a total loss + personal injury claims. Beauty of pet insurance is it cant be jacked up by the in-insured and "temporary replacement pets" at ridiculous weekly hire costs.

Carl in answer to the question, yes I would deffo go down the vets for a chat.
A dog fight is different than a dog that has been attacked. A fight implies both dogs went at it, when this wasn't the case. I would get them to re-send the insurance off again with a cover note attached explaining the original error. You have no issues with the dangerous dogs act so don't worry about that either. Hth mate. |

From the other side of the fence:
Our jack russell terrier does not like other small to medium sized dogs and will growl and bare her teeth if they come too close. Bigger dogs she is submissive. She is a rescue dog and may have been attacked in the past. When ever we see another dog we put her on a lead or pick her up. Despite telling other owners to keep their dogs away, or on a lead when they say hello, some people refuse to control their dogs.

Your next premium should'nt increase (well, not with 'Petplan') because of a claim, though your excess (if you have one) may increase.
As far as I'm aware premiums usually increase along with the age of the pet. ![]() |

Told him if my dog wasnt under control a) his dog would be dead/nearly dead b) he would be looking at two sets of dog bills. Gotta wonder at the owners sometimes ![]() |
