Blackstone Labs

Does anyone have experience with them. I want to have the dealer take a oil sample and then give it to me so I can have it tested. Will the dealer cooperate.

Thanks.

I had a decent experience with them - it took quite a while for them to send my analysis back, though. (This was a few years ago so I can't remember how long it took exactly - just remember it took longer than a few weeks).

It is a neat service, though.

About the dealer cooperating...I wouldn't see why they wouldn't keep a sample for you if they're reputable.

If you're going to go the oil analysis route, then you should go whole hog.
Do the 15k interval oil change and check, then follow up with a 7.5k with check. If that indicates you have plenty of "life" still in the oil, try a 10k interval change and check.

Usually what I've read around these forums (actual blackstone results) was that the oil essentially didn't have any life left at 15k for these owners. That is, it was time to change. NOT that it was "past time" to change.

In every case these owners decided to go with either 7.5k or 10k intervals as an insurance policy, but never followed up with further blackstone reports.

Wait, that wasn't completely correct: I remember now that there was one owner who did a check at 15k then at 7.5k. He reported the results on another bmw forum.
At 7.5k the report said that he had plenty of life left. He was satisfied and decided to just keep doing 7.5k intervals.

I change every 5000. 7500 is too long imo. 15000 is just silly.

If you feel comfortable at 15k then stick with it. I dont and most people on here dont. Bmw considers 100k miles a lifetime. 15 k oil change intervals are most likely designed to get the car to their "lifetime". If you want to keep it past 100k, change the oil sooner.

I've used Blackstone a reasonable amount. They are the easiest to work with and well priced. Some have called into question their results or their test-to-test numerical variance from time-to-time but using Blackstone is leaps and bounds ahead of just changing the oil when the light comes on and doing nothing else.

Their analysis and commentary is not prepared by an elite industry specialist. If you have special concerns you need to partner with (and pay for) someone like Terry Dyson to add his expertise.

If you can get the sample - go for it. Just make sure that the sample is taken "mid stream".
