What's a good place for service in Raleigh?

Hey all,

I'm trying to find a shop for my son's e90 335 (free maintenance over) in raleigh, NC. He is a student there, away from home and I don't know the stealership or any good indy shops.

Any good suggestions? He needs brakes possibly and scheduled maintenance.

Also give Euro Motors a look. I'm assuming your son is at NC State. This shop is on the edge of downtown and a lot closer to NCSU than BPC. Another is Black Forest Industries. They're pretty close to NCSU, too.

Ok, thanks.. he's at Duke University, so that's my dilemma. I'm trying to find something close to him.

The stealership to use would be Performance BMW in Chapel Hill (not too far from Duke). I'm not familiar enough with Durham to know of any indy's in that area.

My coworker uses G3 Automotive Solutions in N. Raleigh and absolutely loves the shop. Google Maps says it's 18 miles from Duke. Shade Tree Mechanics in N. Raleigh is great, too! Old school place.

Anyone heard anything about Automotion in the chapel hill area? I love in chapel hill and go to Duke. Is it worth it to make the trek to bimmerperformance or shade tree?

Also, I live right by performance BMW. For dealer work they have been great, but obviously way more expensive than an indy.

Been driving cars for 22 years, have had many encounters with dealerships and Performance BMW has been FAR WORSE then any dealership I have ever dealt with.

Communication was horrible, service terrible and god forbid their is an issue good luck with someone calling you back in a timely manor.

I am talking service writers, techs, sales manager all were terrible. Oh the detail guys not so great either.

I do most of my own work and have since sold the 335 but will be trying a new dealer when the wifes X1 needs service.

But if you are around Carborro ever the guys at Auto Logic have been great to work with.

Wow, our experiences are very different. I bought my car from a third party and used performance to do the ppi. The car had a week left on the extended turbo warranty and performance agreed to replace both under warranty. They also massively reduced their labor charge on replacing the waterpump and thermostat while down there and did a walnut blast for $550 (I know this is not amazing compared to indy prices, but it's quite a bit cheaper than their normal prices).

While they worked on my car I got a loaner f30 with 600 miles on it. I told my SA that I had a vacation planned, was it alright to take the loaner. I was told "sure, go ahead" and that if I wasn't back by the time my car was ready "no big deal". Anyway, I returned the loaner after putting more than 1500 miles on it (I drove to MA and back plus other driving) several days after my car was ready. No problems or complaints from the dealer and their total came in $200 less than their initial estimate (walnut blast, thermostat and radiator, and an oil change were all out of pocket).

Their communication was also good, my SA returned my calls generally within 15 minutes if I missed him and was extremely helpful and responsive.

I don't know... perhaps it depends on your service adviser.

Surprised no one has mentioned Import Motor Werks in Cary. Used to take my car there when I lived in Raleigh. Family run and the owners are great people. My old roommate now works for them as one of their BMW techs. He is extremely knowledgeable and is a BMW certified Master Technician. He came from Schaeffer in Wilmington and worked there for something like 7 years. He's a BMW fanatic and does Spec E36 racing.

Import Motor Werks is not bad, I've actually got my car there now for an alignment. They give out loaners (they've got a couple of E39s and a couple of E46's), which is pretty awesome for an Indy. However, I don't think I'd use them for anything other than routine maintenance. For any problems, they charge a diagnostic fee of $75 to hook it up to an OBD2 reader. To actually diagnose something, you've got to pay the $75 AND the hourly rate of $130+/hour.

Perhaps I'm an outlier because I do standard maintenance myself and leave the stuff I can't figure out for the mechanics, but its frustrating to basically have to pay $200 to have them actually look at your car with no guarantee that they'll actually fix something.
