Help for hire, low fee and teach you how to work on the car - Bay Area

Hey folks,

I'm a pretty seasoned hobby mechanic, and have found my e90 very easy to work on. I've been building and repairing all my own cars and motorcycles for 20+ years. So far have done my water pump, JB4, walnut blasting, and downpipes easily, and in quick time.

If you need some work done on your car, we can work out a reasonable deal for help and teaching in getting your car fixed or modded. I have all the tools and a place to work on the car. Redwood City area. Let me know what you need.

OK let me provide a little more info and some pricing. I'm not really looking to do the work on your cars, mainly for liability reasons. For instance, sometimes things go wrong. When I installed my DPs, there was a fit problem. I ended up with double gaskets on the back of one of the DPs, as the DP was about 1/4" too short. Just poorly made, I guess. I could have aborted the job, reinstalled the original downpipes, and returned the ill fitting DPs, but I decided to add an extra gasket in there, and crank the gap closed. MIght this present a problem at some point? Yes. But since it is my car, I makde the calculated decision to do it. Luckily, nothing broke when I was tightening up the flanges, it doesn't leak, and I've had no problems since.

So with that in mind, what I am interested in doing is providing you with the tools, space, and knowledge to help you do the repair yourself. So, this offer is really for people who are ready to get their hands dirty, accept the liabilities of modifying or repairing their own cars, but either don't have the place or the tools, or don't have the confidence to attempt the repair/mod themselves.

So I'm thinking I'll charge in the ballpark of $40/hr. For this price, you bring your car over, and we get the repair done with your wrenching, my direction, and my direct help if there's something you can't do. I did the same thing while I was in grad school, around 2003, but at that point I was charging $30. Seems reasonable.

Example: Downpipe install. You would be the one under the car wrenching, but if there's a point where you are stuck, then I will jump under the car and get done whatever you were having trouble with. The job would probably take about 4 hours; so your $160 would result in the installation and invaluable learning and confidence for your next repair.

Example: JB4 install. You would be the one turning to screws and plugging in the plugs, under my direction. The job would probably take about 1.5 hours. For $60, you would get your tune installed and will gain the know how so you can uninstall yourself the next time around.
