Difference between 325 & 328

I thought I'd do some search online, so the link below is obviously not correct.

http://www.ehow.com/about_6602561_di...5-328-bmw.html

So I rather ask the experts here.
2006 325i & 2007 328i has same engine size and everything (3.0 liter). But why does BMW call it differently?
As far as I know, every 6 years BMW update (not LCI) their 3 series. So from 4th generation to 5th generation 3 series, how come the first year model (2006) overlaps the name 325i?

Why didn't they name the Sedan 328i in 2006? and leave the 2005 coupe/convertible as 325ci?

Different model numbers for different markets. It used to be true that the engine displacement was the basis for the 2nd and 3rd digits in the Model number. i.e. 318, 325, etc. I know that they ended that in 2000 in the USA Market when they sold the 323 (2.5ltr) and 328 (2.8ltr). They were concerned that with models numbered 325 and 328, there wouldn't be enough of a differentiation since there was a $10,000 difference in the base price. So they named the lower end car the 323.

I can understand that. But as far as pricing goes both 2006 325i and 2007 328i were same. And both cars are identical, when it comes to shape, size of engine and other specifications.

I do know that the 328i does have about 15 more HP then the 325i. And also I believe that the 325i has a ZF tranny while the 328i has GM tranny I may be wrong though.

The numbers are different because the 2006 3 series carried over from the E46, which had a 325 and 330. In 2007 they changed the engines. The 328 got an engine between the 325 and 330 and the 335 was given a 300hp twinturbo engine.

BMW's (and other automakers') model names are irrelevant because of forced induction. It used to be more displacement meant more power, so the higher model names had more displacement, and thus, more power. But now, in the case of the E9X 328/335, the engines have the same displacement but one is forced induction with 70 more hp. It also has to deal with downsizing. They aren't going to call the F30 3 series the 320i. Look at Mercedes AMG, their engines and models have no correlation anymore.

Ummm, you may not be right... 2005 sedans were 2.5 liter (325i) and 3.0 liter (330i) However in 2006 Both 325i & 330i were 3.0 liter (of course 330i was turbo charged).
IDK... in the end it doesn't really matter, but I've been always curious.
Thanks for you input anyways.

The 330 is not turbo charged.
US specs
325=215hp
328=230hp
330=255hp

Only the 335 and 335d came with a trubo engine in the E9x series of cars.

Hi,

The 330i (US spec) was not turbocharged. BMW gets different levels of output from the same 3.0 NA engine by using different intake designs, valve timing and software.

The 325i and 328i do have a power/torque difference, as a result.

Interesting, always thought 2006 330i was turbocharged.
Thanks.

Garage List
E90 325i & 330i both have the same 3.0 engine except 325i has a single stage intake vs 330i had multi intake, that is why 330i can produce 255hp.
For the name why they call it different it's the marketing guys wanted to confuse people.

No the reason why it's pulling 255hp is because it has a better engine tune and a 3 stage intake manifold. I also believe it has a better exhaust but not 100% sure on that one. Although you can pull numbers better then that with a AA or Eurochagred tune, plus a performance exhaust, and a less restrictive intake (euro intake of bmw perf.), and of course a 3-stage intake manifold.

I dont think there is a much difference in performance of 325 and 328. 15hp difference isnt small and 328 will pull stronger in feel but the numbers would be almost the same.

i am guessing about 0.1-0.2 difference in 0-60.

Some 328's have 2 stage intake manifolds IIRC.

330's have less restrictive exhaust and 3 stage intake manifold, and better tune

325's are severely detuned 330's. Single stage intake manifold, lower tune, and different exhaust.

Early 2007 328's had ZF transmissions as well, but changed in later part of 2007.
ALL 325's and 330's had ZF transmissions.

I wonder where the difference in HP comes from

Is it just tuning or tweaks to the intake and exhaust?
I know you can change a 325 into a 330+ with the 3 stage intake
some tuning and maybe and exhaust.

see sticky's in the above forum for 3 stage input.
