POLL: Did Your Car Experience an MPG Decrease Since Performing Emissions/EGR Recall

Did you experience a drop in mpg's since taking your car in to the dealer for the BMW mandated emissions/EGR recall campaign? If so, please indicate as such and it would be helpful to know by what percentage your mpg's dropped.

I would like to start building some statistics on this problem, which may or may not prove to be of some benefit when dealing with BMW.

My car's city mpg's dropped 26%! I went from an avg of 23 mpg's to 17 mpg's and I am mad as hell about it I have not had an opportunity to test highway miles yet, but I expect there is a drop there as well. I will report back once I get a chance to take the car a highway trip.

I'd say mine is definitely slightly better after the recall than before it.

Chris, people's experience with this recall and mpg seem to be all over the map. I've read accounts like yours in which people have experienced significant mpg loss, and I've read accounts like GBD's in which people have experienced no change or improvement.

I don't know what to think.

I'm curious about how many miles you've put on your car since the recall. Obviously you've got enough miles to compare to your previous history; do you get any sense that the mileage is improving over the tankfuls? Or - are you stuck at the reduced mpg tank after tank after tank?

Please ensure you are comparing ACTUAL CALCULATED MILEAGE when responding to this poll as opposed to the OBC calculated mileage. The OBC mileage has a variable correction factor which may or may not be accurate.

Before I got the recall taken care of, I too was concerned that it would result in a drop in mpg. In the months since, however, I haven't noticed any change. I still hover around 31-32 mpg in 50/50 mixed driving.

I haven't noticed any performance decrease, however I've definitely lost MPG.

Driving patterns haven't changed at all, still driving the exact same 120 mile daily round trip to work on the exact same route.

Went from an average of 36.6mpg to 33.1 over a 10% loss.

My loss is about 10% maybe slightly more. Power not impacted.

Chris - could you have them reflash? Maybe they screwed something up during reprogramming.

I do mostly hwy and put under 100 miles on since the recall. I will vote after I put it through a full tank, calculated by mileage.

May not be the same for all...especially pre and post recall. Its correctable but its an indirect measure of mileage with a correction factor so if the correction factor is off, your readout will be correspondingly off.

For me the big difference was that the power changed. Before at 70-75 km/h i use to floor it and it kicked pretty badly compare to now it does that kick at 115km/h!

What I was trying to say is that my actual calculated mileage is almost the same as OBC mileage between fill ups.

Right now I'm in the control group. I have an early 2011 model and received the recall notice but I have NOT had it performed yet.

I've noticed a decrease in MPG (calculated, per tank) of about 2MPG over the past 3 months or so with the same commute. About 25k miles on the car.

I attribute it to hotter temps, which lowers efficiency, and more use of A/C. I plan on having the recall done at my next scheduled service which will be within the next two weeks.

Great that we are approaching this semi scientifically. I also have an early 2011 and went though the recall and my MPG dropped. I also figured the AC use was worth about 2 MPG between no use and heavy use.

I driven 6K miles since the recall. Actually am going in next week for regular (oil and DEF) service. Apparently the car 'called home' and the dealer contacted me. I will register my complaint about the MPG loss. Pretty sure the remapping that lowered MPG was to reduce the soot buildup in the EGR/Intake system. Question is can they create a fuel map to meet both targets at the same time, max fuel economy and soot reduction. But until BMW at least acknowledges the loss of MPG from the latest mapping, they will not be trying to fix anything.

Also, FWIW - my onboard computer avg consistently reads about 1.5-2mpg lower than the actual at-the-pump calculation.

And I think the July heatwave really took its toll.

Mine as well, OBC reads on average 5% lower than actual. No change in this offset after the update, still OBC reads 5% low.

Just got done with a long road trip with the kids. 6 Days

Started with full tank in Northern California, near Sacramento.
Day 1: NorCal -> Bend, OR; filled up, but still had over 1/4 tank. 35.3 MPG
Day 2: Bend - > Hermiston, OR
Day 4: Hermiston -> Portland; filled up, gas light just came on. 34.7 MPG
Day 5: Portland -> Grants Pass, OR
Day 6: Grants Pass -> NorCal (Made a stop at Shasta Lake to see the caverns and in Redding to see the Sundial Bridge)

Filled up at home, running on fumes with 5 miles to empty, 34.7 MPG

Now this was almost all freeway driving at or just above speed limit as I was trying to get exceptional MPG's.
I now have over 18K on the odometer.

When I first got the car we did a road trip from Norcal to San Diego. I managed over 39 MPG on that trip and I was not trying at that time.

All MPG calculated using iPhone app called Car Care.

I took car in for service yesterday and mentioned the decreased MPG since the recall was done. SA didn't really have much to say about why that recall would result in lower MPG's.
