Fabricated Downpipes ?

Stop me if this is a stupid idea. But I've seen many downpipes on this forum sell for $600-$800 used.. The ebay ones are like $400. I was wondering if anyones just taken there current downpipe to an exhaust shop, and just had them cut out the cats and replace it with straight pipes. When I got muffler work on my old 328 it was $40 I think for installation of the pipes, and that was it. I was thinking about buying some used pipes from someone on here and just taking them to the shop to have them fabricate new ones. Hell, maybe they'd even fabricate whole new ones. I saw on a website where they just sell the ring that goes into the turbo housing for like $80 im wanting to say. Has anyone had this done? Am I missing something in this? Only disadvantage I can think of is that you'd have to run factory 2.5" I'm wanting to say.

Thanks ya'll for the help!

VRSF downpipes are 400 new and they are 3 inch and life time warranty this equals a no brainer.

I researched this as well and had my local guy quote me a couple hours to do this. He was planning on cutting stock dps shortly after the stock flanges so the stock gaskets and hardware wouldn't be disturbed.

I was all lined up to go this way until I noticed on the other forum BMS has their new 3" DPS done.....I was one of the first 10 to get a set. They are being delivered today!

Due to the relatively small price difference between the two options, I'm glad I will be able to retain my stock dps in case of resale, etc.

WPS!

Agreed, and if you ever need to pass emissions (if your state requires a sniffer) It's great to have some cat's on hand.

+1, keep the OEMs for emergency emissions testing

Had no idea that BMS was making N54 DPs, but they look identical to the VRSF's but for ~$60 less

it was done when the raceland vs AR dp's was going on ( ya ive been here a while lol).

Ever since PLM and VRSF came along its so much more simple to just buy those.

That was my plan though to buy an extra pair of someone here. Thanks for the info on the BMS DP tho.. $370 aint bad at all. I'm still gonna get a quote from the shop soon once i get around to it.

I'd buy pre-made DPs versus cutting up your stockers. Cheaper, easier, better fitment, and you can put the stockers back on if you a) sell the car or b) need to pass emissions for any reason (for instance if you move).

Yes I've done it:

But I eventually replaced them with Macht Schnells, thinking that these would be better. The performance is the same, I now believe.
