Speeding

Went past a camera van today at some ridiculous speed, have consoled myself that I can say goodbye to my license but how long can I expect to be banned for?

I already have 6 points (3 to come off in May) and was on a B-Road at the time, any advice guys?

Turn into a jibbering alcoholic?

It all depends on loads of things.

How fast you were caught, what region you were caught, previous convictions and the judge on the day.

It's possible the van was not yet setup or the guy operating it was on his tea break but other than that you will have to just take it to court and plead that you need the car for work purposes and maybe just get a fat fine and 3pts.

I know it's a possibly self incriminating statement but how fast were you going?

The biggest compliant I have about the Autobox on my 335 is just how easy it is to get to silly speeds without trying. I went past a camera van (totally unmarked so might have been one of those ANPR vans) the other day at 45mph+ in a 40 zone, didn't even realise I was doing 45+ till I looked at my dash had simply touch the throttle to close the gap in the traffic....

Been 10 days now so might have "got away" with it, but still if I get some points its fair enough I was going over the speedlimit so no one else to blame. Still now I drive around at 2-3 mph below the speed limit, at least my mpg reading is going up .

Hope you don't get banned...apparently the Police are offering more "speed awareness courses" these days

Yer you need to go on speed awareness course

As the judge announces in court you were caught doing 120, do you have anything to say?

FFS yer man I reckoned I was doing at least 140

If you have 6points arent you ok for another 3?

Unless you are talking you were over a tonne or double speed limit then it's a ban?

I have been fortunate enough to go past one at about 45 in a 30 and never got anything through. Must have just been setting up. I think the have 14days to get a NIP to you though?

I dropped it into sport to overtake 2 cars I was doing well over 100 mph on a B-Road, and I'm in Lincolnshire don't think they offer speed awareness courses here

No previous convictions the 6 points are from SP30 and and running a red light both fixed penalty

Do you use your car for work and dependant on your licence to earn a living? If so get a good motoring lawyer as you won't get a ticket for that speed just a summons in the post. Your only hope is the van was either downloading the previous catches of the day or is was targeting another car, although if you were overtaking there attention would probably be on you!

Not being funny, but I would think that if you were seen doing that speed the old bill would have made a visit to your gaff by now to have a little word.

My thought process is that 115 on a B-road isn't your average bit of speeding - I'm not judging, btw, that would be the pot calling the kettle black - and it would be remiss of the Police, having witnessed that sort of speed, not to check the car hadn't been stolen or, if it hadn't and you were a serial speeder, to inform you that a NIP is coming your way and to slow down in the interim.

Like I say, not judging, just thinking aloud. Perhaps one of our resident traffic police can pitch in and confirm or deny if they do visit in such cases.

Guidelines for speed awareness course is speedlimit + 10% +9mph and no course in previous 2 years.

So for NSL-60mph it is: 60 + 6 + 9 = 75mph and you should get offered a speed awareness course (except in Scotland, those jocks have no leniency so you always get points). Above this level, it is points or ban if you are going fast enough.

Perhaps if you were going really fast, you can just get an outright ban which may be only 7 days instead of a totting up ban which is months!!!!!

edit: just saw it was 115mph. At least you don't need to worry about a few months long totting up ban. As sheps said I would have thought you would get either a summons or a visit from plod for that speed although 115 indicated is more like 107mph true speed.

slight lecture time: You aren't the first person to do over a ton on a B-road but regardless of any speed limit, at 115mph, would you have been able to stop in the distance that you could see to be clear in the entire overtaking manoeveur, eg if you had completed your overtake and were still going at 115mph (it is rare you have a long straight on a B-road) if there was a tractor stopped just around whatever bend was coming up, would you have been able to stop?

115 overtaking two cars on a B Road, afraid IMHO you deserve to be walking especially given you already have 6 points. We can all speed but sometimes it goes beyond that into recklessness.

Mate BMW speedo's are not as innacurrate as that. At Bruntingthorpe mine was only out 3-4mph at 150+

I got caught by one of the failed police officer vans doing 74 in a 50 (a retarded 50 on a perfectly open dual track) and they only gave me 3 points.
