If these EC proposals go ahead it will have serious implications for a lot of us,as well as the whole car modifying industry.

The Commission proposes to introduce a definition for a roadworthiness test that components of the vehicle must comply with characteristics at the time of first registration.
This may prevent most modifications to vehicles without further approval of the vehicle. (this will apply to many components and to all types of vehicle)

The implication is that even BMW performance parts would be verboten. A vehicle would have to gain type approval whist those performance parts were fitted

I can imagine it being an absolute nightmare on day 1.

All insurance policies for modified vehicles immediately become invalid because the vehicle is illegal. Insurance companies will need to pay back premiums for the remainder of the period IF the vehicle is put back to standard - then who will be responsible for picking up the 'Admin' fee etc?

Net result = outrage.

MOT garages will need to know 1,000,000 times more about cars than they currently do - for example how can they check for my JB4 without opening the ECU, or someone elses Remap without a reader? How can they tell my aftermarket downpipes which (even on a ramp with the undertray off) look fairly similar to the OEM ones.

Net result = outrage.

When this law comes in (if it does) how will the country cope with the number of stealthily modified cars being sold as 'standard' and then being driven, insured and ultimately crashed by unsuspecting people who thought they had bought a car which was legit? How will they sort the real victims from people like those on this forum who know their car is modified but try to play the 'victim' in the event that there is an issue?

Net result = outrage.

I could come up with probably 20 more similar scenarios. This just can't be allowed to happen.

Outrage in the short term, but let's be honest, there's nobody on here who's car is suddenly going to fail the new tuv style test. And if it helps get some of the right sheds you see on the road where someone has replaced their shocks with something they got in pound land and now thinks its a WTCC car then I'm all for it.

It won't happen overnight if it does, it would be staged, something like from the date of your next MOT you have 12 months to get these mods tuv tested. Not exactly a massive hardship now is it?

Imagine the outrage that would cause with people having to buy brand new sets of crap run flats?

Again, why shouldn't they say that? Surely the car has been designed to have run flats and by changing them, you're altering the characteristics of the car, potentially affecting safety.

If you did want to fit non-RFT though, all it would take would be someone to look at them and say, "yes, he's fitted the correct size and load rating of tyre for the car and not tried to stretch a fucking pram tyre over a set of 20s, reducing the amount of grip the car has, just because he thinks he looks 'well bad blud, innit'!"

Same topic comes around every year and nothing ever materializes. Simple fact is car modifying is a multi billion pound industry which produced a vast amount of income, personally i cant see it being stopped. Bear in mind how many companies that would be putting out of business; and completely ending the kit car industry

I don't think it will be an issue, IF it ever happens.

This is how it is in Germany now, which is why all German parts are TUV approved. You fit a TUV approved part or parts, and submit the car for a TUV test. It passes, gets a certificate, end of.

If it helps get some of the badly modified and probably dangerous cars off the road, I'm all for it.
