Thumbs up PTF Cobb ProTuned; FBO Pump S2+ [w/ Dyno & Logs]

Hi guys,

I recently had my car custom tuned by ProTuningFreaks (PTF) and I thought I would share my experience/results. My car is FBO and I have been running Cobb’s latest and greatest aggressive off-the- shelf (OTS) map: S2+FMIC v402. I was curious to know if there was any room for power improvement over these OTS maps running our Petro Canada 94 octane gas. So, I got in touch with Dzenno@PTF to see what could be done. I’m local to him, so we started off with road tuning. The OTS data logs showed my car is running strong with minimal timing corrections:

As you can see, the OTS timing is very conservative ranging from 3 up to ~9 degrees @ 6100 RPM (my usual shift point). Dzenno was able to up my timing in the midrange along with some other tweaks to ensure optimum performance consistently and reliably:

Two weeks after the road tune, we went to Champion Motors to see what the gains were. We picked up +17 whp/+14 wtq in peak numbers and a max delta of +22whp/+24wtq in the midrange @ 4900RPM! This is without making any load changes, which may yield even better results. We also did a “stock” run at the end - but with all my bolt-ons. I would expect the base numbers to be 15whp/15wtq lower if it was a true stock run:

Ambient: 80F, Humidity: 38%, Pressure: 29.69 in-Hg STD: 1.02

I’m pretty happy with the outcome. Doing back to back pulls with the OTS map vs. the ProTuned map, you can feel a big difference in the midrange at the onset of WOT. The car just feels more “eager” to move with the added timing.

Overall, I only have good things to say about my pro-tuning experience. I’ve had some follow-up questions and logs that I was curious about and Dzenno has been able to respond back immediately. So, they won’t just hang you out to dry after the protune is complete. I would recommend getting a protune once you have all your bolt-on upgrades in place; I waited until I was FBO and it was the next logical step for me. I’m thinking of getting a custom E85 or meth map for my next protune.

Oh, and for those that are wondering, the Dynojet at Champion Motors is fairly conservative. As a reference, Dzenno made 402whp/445wtq on the same dyno with FBO+meth back when he was still on stock turbos. I’d expect peak ~400whp/~440wtq on more optimistic Dynojets (ie. Neetronics for our local guys). Anyway, here are some quick pics from Champion Motors. They’re a legit shop that mainly specializes in Vettes or LSX motors. There were some serious 900+ whp twin turbo Vettes while we were there

That is one joke of a fan. I would guess that contributed to your lower peak numbers too. Solid gains though!

That's nice gain.
By the way, why isn't Dzenno on this forum anymore? I like to read his knowledgeable posts but all of sudden he disappeared...

Looks good.
I noticed that I got more timing drops with Ultra 94 in the fall/spring.
This may be correlated with Petro Canada switching to the winter blend.

Probably a good idea to log again in the fall.

Wait he was a vendor and got banned. How is that possible. Question. To get this pro tuned for 20+HP gain, What is the price for this for?

check out bimmerpost, or protuningfreaks.com. $200 for a remote tune, varying prices for tuning locally on a dyno with them in person, etc.

That's a high CFM carpet dryer fan. Definitely not a joke if you have ever stood in front of it. I've used that very same fan myself when i tuned Dzenno's RB car at this shop last year. Nor is the dyno "lower reading" than other dynojets as evident by the perfectly normal ~300whp baseline with stock tune and FBO mods. Is there any reason why the car isn't running more than 13.5psi at peak hp? With more boost, there is at least another 20-25whp left on the table when running Canadian 94oct.

Good results man! We should get you some Vbox runs in sometime to see how it performs on the street haha.
I had VERY similar results on my friends custom ATR map I helped him out with WOHOO I feel like a t00ner!! I need to pickup a Cobb someday.

Said this before Dzenno knows his stuff! Great numbers without going nuts with boost. Looking forward to your E85 testing, where the heck are you getting E85 in Canada? Any plans for meth?

Yeah, the fan is powerful for its size. I understand they just got it actually to replace the ones being used last year (1 small and 1 larger but less efficient).

I believe the car was running ~15.3psi boost @ 5700 RPM in that dyno run.
Load was actually left untouched from the OTS maps. At the time, we figured we would leave that for meth or E85 but may revisit it.

EDIT: Load was actually a bit less that OTS. But again, saving it for E85 or meth.

Thanks. Yeah, I figure I should invest in a Vbox at some point; it'll also help to see where my driving skills are at

For the time being, the E85 we'll use is from across the border (Niagara Falls) Depending on the results, it may hold me off of meth, we'll see.
Haven't tried local but I'll find a way

Nice numbers! You have meth as well correct?

I'm not sure if I should protune it now, or later on when I get meth...

What’s with the WG dump in the topend… you can see it in the dyno? I’ll never like the maxed torque below 5k rpm… it’s basically only useful for tranny/clutch stress, spinning tires, and impressing riders. Boost at 5500rpms should be increased if anything to keep your usable avg HP higher. Anyway, disagree with the tuning approach which now seems the standard… copying Cobb. How about actually using ATR, then only slightly changing 2 tables. Glad I can’t get negged here… hehe.

OP, log that mapping on the street… 10deg increase in ambient temps, you’ll see timing dance.

I'd love to review the csv files if you're willing to post them... it's fun, especially with dynos to compare.

EDIT: props on the detailed post and review!

SERIOUSLY?

You are driving all the way to Niagara

Hope you are taking about 20 gas cans with you.

IF you have room in the trunk can I add mine?

Yes but it doesn't get air to the whole front of the car which is the issue.

NICE!!!! I'd say send woptang22 a PM about his experience getting ProTune'd by Akuma, also pretty sure he posted results. Otherwise I'd recommend going with a ProTune from ProTuning Freaks.

I drove all the way to Maryland to have Jake mine person, was the BEST car ride home ever -- Was incredible to drive down with an OTS Map & then drive back with my E85 Map
