Phil@USPmotorsports - e90 N55 Build Thread

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to have a place to share my adventure with my new (to me) e90 LCI MSport. A little about me, I am for every purpose a car guy. I have owned some pretty awesome BMWs, a couple of VWs, some japanese cars and sprinkle in an SUV or two. All of which I have always have fun modifying. The company I work for just recently introduced BMW as a brand we are going to start to offer parts to. So what better way to get my feet wet than to buy one

I choose the e90 because of the relationship I have had with all the other e chassis cars i have owned. I had an amazing e30 318is, a e36M Saloon and a e46M! All which have been really great to drive and own. Owning this car now has me smiling from ear to ear in what can be done. I choose the N55 variant because I wanted to see how far this could go, since all the N54 guys are so developed. I drive my car a quar…. I drive my car and have a strange sense of enjoying all of it. I will post all my happenings on here and give you a glimpse of what we go through together.

While I am writing this today, the e90 I purchased came from an auction in TX….. Man, this is teaching me patience. When I got the car, there is SOOOO much I just personally want to do to it. I wanted a manual, wanted the MSport package and wanted an e90 (I have a couple of kids). Well, I got all those things along with a bad transmission, a repainted bumper, etc… So finding a N55 trans (GS6-45BZ) has been interesting and no one really rebuilds these. So three weeks later, I found one and it's on the way to me. While I am in there, this is just who I am - I ordered some things haha. Going in with the new transmission is a 335is clutch, BMS Clutch Valve, BMS Clutch Stop and a BMS Billet Shift Rod. I am pretty excited to see how this feels once I am done.

Next on my list is:
Wheels & Tires
Suspension
M3 Control Arms
Downpipe
IC
Charge Pipe/Throttle Pipe
Exhaust (catback)
MHD or JB4 - I am leaning more MHD from what I am reading.

Here is the VIN decode from my car:

Thank you, both for the welcome. Hopefully we can be a sponsor of this forum if they ever get back to us.

Here is a picture of some of the cars I have previously built that will give some insight of where I want to go with this build.

Thank you, this world is new to us as a company but I have been a long time BMW fan. This just gave me a reason to get back into it.

I know from soup to nuts has been done to the N54 so lets see what the N55 cars can bring.

Nice man, Welcome. I really wanted that color or Alpine White and a 6MT M sport myself but I just could not find it all together in a clean example. I look forward to your build and I highly recommend MHD.

I had to wait 2 months before I pulled the trigger on this one. Almost did a non MSport but I passed on it.

I have so been on the fence between MHD and JB4. We are a BMS dealer so its easy for me to get my hands on one and I like some of the failsafe options with the ability to tune e85 (I have a station right by work and right by the house). I also have read great driveability from the MHD tunes. In the end, I expect to be a FBO car with some sort of upgraded turbo.

Yeah I think the major difference is that the JB4 just requires a more involved user who must be willing to tinker and change things. The JB4 definitely offers some cool features but add ons for flash only tuned N55 cars is coming really fast.

I wanted M Sport but ended up with a Sport and then just installed Bilstein PSS and ordered the BMW performance front and rear bumpers. My car is FBO (except intake) as well and running MHD. I will be going Pure Stage 2 and a custom tune soon.

But I recommend covering all the maintenance bases prior to trying to make power. My car has been dead on reliale for the past 82,000 miles but I did the radiator, hoses, water pump, tstat, OFHG, oil cooler gasket, starter, IM gaskets, trans flush, diff flush, etc all recently in preparation for 500 WHP

I dont know if thats something I want to do but I do really appreciate your info.

Sounds like we are on the similar track for performance mods but I would like to see why no one offers a single turbo kit with a larger turbo, like lets say a 6266.

Maintenance is something I am doing now and I assume I will not stop this for the rest of this cars life.

This forum won't let me link it, I assume because it's on another forum.

But Google "Big Boost offers Stage 3 BMW N55 (E & F-Series) turbo upgrade kits with 620+ whp capability"

But unless you want more than 550WHP a ST kit is not needed.

It seems like everything I am researching is that if I want the 550WHP, I will need a combination of the following:
  • WMI
  • e85 mixture
  • Port injection
  • at least an LPFP upgrade

If I could do like a PT Stage 2 set up on pump and get 550WHP. I think I would be more than happy but I dont think that is possible.

Fuelit got 540WHP out of their shop car with a JB4/MHD BEF, Pure Stage 2 turbo, Stage 2 bucketless LPFP, and Platinum Port Injection Kit on E85.

We already have a new idea for a product that has never been produced for the LCI N55 models. This should cross over to our friends in the 135s as well.

That sounds great and I wonder if there is another way to skin that cat.
