Test drove the 5.0 yesterday

I was bored yesterday and decided to go to the ford dealer and test drive a new 5.0 mustang to compare to my 335xi.

Pros:
Instant power
The feeling of large displacement
The sound
6 speed manual felt good, very short shifts
The car "feels" light on it's feet
Quick for being stock (even at 5.280 elevation)


Cons:
The hood and dash make for a pretty terrible view (feels like you can't see well out the front compared to the e90)
Blind spots galore
Interior feels like every rental car I drive when out of town for business
Lights in and out are chincy
Handles much diff than my 335, feels much more sloppy


Overall:
It was fun driving this inexpensive beast of a car. I think the best thing about this car is the fact that you could buy a supercharger kit for 5 or 6 g's and this car would basically be a 10 second car (at sea level) without stressing anything on the car.

I have to admit that getting back in my 4 year old 3 series BMW really made me appreciate the quality of my car. I wouldnt want to drive with a client in the mustang. With a tune only, my car feels much quicker and the handling is
much more my style. I have to give it to the mustang that at my altitude, they run mid to high 13's stock and it feels like they can handle high horsepower adders like they are built for it.

The quality of BMW 3 series vs Ford Mustang.......I think BMW wins hands down. However, for lower priced muscle car Mustang is nice.

ahh i got one for a whole day once.. i had the same exact thoughts as you.

i actually really liked it though. if the interior was nicer and you got the xenon lights it would be way better.

the fact that it's a little harder to drive made it kinda fun. feels like it's trying to kill you.

and the sound was amazing.

i've considered getting one, but realistically i'd never be able to justify getting a mustang over a bimmer

It is tempting to have a 10 second monster for a few grand in mods but I can't get over the interior plastic feel. I'm sure the gt500 or boss 302 has a much better feel but at that point, get a gt-r.

I always thought the consesus with the new Mustang GT was that it is a $20k engine attached to a $10k car. The car puts good numbers but is kind of vague with the feedback.

If OP took his 335xi to the track then immediately drove the 5.0 on the track he would be buying one right now. The 335 is a luxury sports car, the Mustang is an inexpensive way to piss off M3s.

I've read all those review about how it's faster then m3 and such but hey all say the Same thing it's brute going around the track

I cross shopped the BMW and mustang 5.0 as my only 2 choices about a month ago. Loved the stang...kinda wish I got it sometimes. Both cars have their own character, and where one excels, the other is still good enough. That's the way I saw it.

Though I've always been partial to american muscle...maybe next time ;-)

Sorry but handling doesnt really have anything to do with numbers. A G37 can go through the slalom faster than a 335 but what has better handling? The BMW. So you are saying the Mustang handles just as well as your M3? Just because the lap times are the same? k gotchya.

I think its hard to judge the handling of the 5.0 to the 335. I think what bmw does with the steering is to give the driver a feeling to push the cars to the limits of an average driver.

Meaning the 335 gives the averager drive the ability to lets say push the car to 90% of its handling limits due to the feel of the cars build. While overall, the mustang handles better but due to its brute power and solid rear axle, the same driver probably only feels comfortable pushing the car to 75% of its handling limits and therefore gets a false sense that the bmw handles better.

Now put a professional driver in both cars who can push the limits to 100% on each car and then you will see how the mustang is faster on the twisties than a stock 335.

I have an xi with ast coils and m3 rear sway and bushings and I've driven a few 5.0s and I can say for a fact that stock the 335xi is no match in the mustang on the bends. After upgrading, my car can handle the turns better and much more confidently than the 5.0 but after a few grand in mods.

So it's more perception than actuality.

The mustang is one of the few US cars we have driving here! And i have to say, i've already seen a lot of them. Even saw a BOSS and a Shelby driving around

The look very... unsporty... square... But not bad! Just not as elegant and aerodynamical as my E92!

The sound is very nice Especialy the BOSS was so brutally good

Compare the HP and torque of an M3 to a Mustang GT, the GT has more under the hood by a wide margin, but when it comes down to lap times on the track, they are very close. The M3's equalizer is its better handling. I'm not saying the OP is right, but him saying his 335 handling is better than the GT does not mean 335 handling is better than an M3.

I said that the 5.0 handles diff than my 335. frankly, it felt sloppy. But I'm not used to rwd cars. I turn the wheel and there isn't much roll and it goes where I want. The 5.0 felt a lil out of control, not even punching it. It felt larger. Let's also keep in mind that it was a 15 min test drive and I didn't get to know the 5.0 like I know my car. Dont worry, I promise your m3 handles better than my 335xi

Again, I said "it handles diff than my 335". Not better but totally different. For better or worse, the 5,0 felt sloppy compared to my 335xi.

I truly think being Xi makes for a more predictable handling scenario than rwd. It is confidence inspiring knowing that the car will almost always go right where you point it, no fish tailing around (which is totally fun). It would be neat to see a awd m3 option with the same whp.

Yes but Ford built the entire car around the 5.0 engine where as my car was built for luxury. NA is great but I'd rather have peak power at 2500 rpm vs their 6500..

What happens when the Mustang guy mods his car? I can think of a few scenarios where a modded 5.0 will destroy a 335. Comparing a modded car vs a stock car really isnt fair, now is it?
