I think it's because your car is BMW? maybe? I mean if it's your first BMW I had the same impression about the engine... but it's just because it's BMW... and there is nothing wrong with it... I guess you got your car not long ago because mine did the same thing at first and it was reduced after a while and now it's just like... I have to hear that sound of mine everyday.

describe loud rattle, does the rpm stay at between 1k-2k. because if that is the issue, it does that everytime it starts my car either

Does the rattle fade away after 2 seconds and only appear after having the car parked a few hours (e.g. overnight)?

Then its the self-adjustment of the valves. (sorry for bad description) It works hydraulic and has to fill up with oil after not running the engine for hours.

Thats normal, I experience the same on my 325ti, especially if its cold outside. Bit annoying though.

Hope that helped you

Engine Rattle

Hmmm... seems this may be a common affliction. I have a 2 month old E90 (325i Sport) 3.0 gas six (US Spec) and I am experiencing a rattle from the engine. It started last week, and has only occurred 3 times... and ONLY when it is cool (less than 10C) and damp outside and only if it has not been running for a while. It will usually go away after letting it run for a few moments and/or driving a couple of kilometers. It rattles no matter the revs of the engine, but there is no discernible performance issue or anything other than its just noisy.

I took it to the shop and they said everything was OK with the car. They asked me to bring it in when I noticed it again, but as mentioned above it goes away after a few moments. So alas, I doubt I can get the mechanic to witness the problem unless I could convince them to keep the car overnight.

What I am gathering from this thread, is that I am not alone in this problem and that my initial suspicions are correct - the problem is related to hydraulics for the valves and lifters.

A long time ago I had an old 1980 AMC Eagle that had a straight 6 and it had exactly the same problem from the day the car was new. There wasn't anything wrong - it was just noisy valves and lifters. Maybe this is just an inherent issue with inline 6 cylinder engines.

I am interested in comments from others who might be experiencing this issue - hopefully it is just an anomoly. Thanks in advance.
