Why not just do it yourself? I'm sure the battery itself is pretty pricey, but putting it in shouldn't be any more difficult than any other car...

Forgive my ignorance but what and why do we need to "register" a battery?

BMW decided that for us to change the battery (a simple DIY), we need to tell the ECU that it has a new battery, so it will charge the battery properly and it doesn't trough you any stupid codes.
To register the battery you need the tool to reset codes or to take the car to a dealer or any bmw shop to do this at an extra cost$$.

phatr1s,

I've replaced my battery, and there was no ECU registration required. The service advisors at BMW tell you this to get you to go to the dealer.

I will say the battery is very heavy and awkwardly place, so watch your back when you lift it out. Don't jerk.

kaleb,

If you do a search for battery replacement in the forum, you will find some members had issues after they installed the battery with out registering.
I just want to cover my **ss before I replace the battery, and not to pay for extra money if my battery die on me.

I installed the battery in my previous bmw's with no issues but, it looks like for my current car I had to register the new battery, trust me, I'm not happy to pay $325 just for a freaking battery.
Maybe you the lucky one with no issues, when did you replace the battery?
Do you replace it with an OEM battery?

i've replaced my battery before and did not register it.. if you continue your research it shows you have to register it only to change the amp and requirements for your new battery. Do not let the battery place up-sell you on their BS... find the battery that is an exact replacement and get it as that will have the sames amps as our OE one...

ZRsasd,

What brand battery you replaced the battery.

I was thinking to order the OEM battery from BMW.

Thanks for all the input!

I replaced my battery without register at my friend shop 2 months ago, and yesterday my the car couldn't start. Brought it to my friend shop and it turned out the starter has broken. He told me to replace a new starter for $340. I just wondering whether the "un-registered" is the cause of my broken starter??

Ill register your battery if you're willing to come out to Keller. I don't believe in charging people for something that takes 10 minutes.

If he just cleared the low voltage codes, then no. If I remember it is under coding/program on the launch, but its been a minute. I'm at a different shop now (in Atlanta) and have gotten used to Autologic and ISTA.
