It's an "overrun" pulley. It only drives the alternator in the forward direction. It allows the alternator to spin faster than the engine if engine RPMs drop suddenly. They do fail, and they are on all kinds of cars since about 2005. That noise is a possibility, but I haven't seen or heard a failed overrun pulley in person.

Exactly James. I've done 4 N52 alternators in the last 2 weeks and spaced that noise as a possibility until I revisited the thread. Sounds a little quieter, but same tone. I haven't seen an N54 fail yet, but it has to be a matter of time I'm sure.

And the verdict - loose/bad power steering pulley. The bolts were pretty loose on it, so we went ahead and put a new one. No more sound.

Last person to touch that pulley was the dealership. They replaced it along with my subframe for the recall. That was about a year ago, so maybe that's long enough to exonerate them. Either that or they didn't tighten the bolts enough and that wouldn't surprise me.

Close inspection discovered it. At first it wasn't noticeable, but we were able to determine that it was coming from the bottom of the engine. So we put the car on the lift and were able to locate the source.

Big thanks to Precision Sport Industries in Orlando, FL to getting this all worked out.
