Factory warranty extension $5k - worth it?

I posted this thread regarding the cost of the factory warranty extension.

Now, I was interested that some guys are thinking that it's actually worth paying nearly $5k (they discounted it a bit) for another 3 years.
Since my car has done 13,500km in the first 3 years, it might only have done 30,000km when I go to sell it, so that's a plus.

How much extra is it worth to someone if it has one year's factory warranty?

And if I keep it for 7 years, like I did with my old 330, then it won't have any warranty.

The DCT is the one that worries me.

Got two days to decide on this one...

Do it.. if nothing else your covered with a fixed cost. You will have a significant selling point when you do decide to sell (which I presume is within the next 5 years?) and given that our engines are a "first to market" what they will be like in later years is an unknown. I (stupidly) didn't remember to extend my warranty, despite repeated reminders, something for which I am now kicking myself.

Fark that 5k will get you a bunch of upgrades, or a good night on the town

Tell them your not interested.. and be convincing.

Tell them the price needs to get down to around $3k and you may reconsider.

These policies are roughly calculated on a 100% margin... true cost around $3k... dealer margin RRP close to $6k.

Its a bit like the wheel and tyre insurance they try to flog you... dealer said i could have it for $850 for 3yrs... I assured him he obviously lives in a land of kandy kanes and elves if he thought that was going to happen - I told him I've got $400 with his name on if he stitches up the deal in the next 2 mins... we agreed on $470.

$850 to $470 in 2mins....

Always remember that the only difference between a dealer and a thief is..... is..... is.... oh thats right, there is no difference!!

My 330d cost me around $3700 for another 3 years. The main reason that I got it was because there was a unresolved engine choking problem when idling when cold and when it is in gear. Last for around 20 sec and stop like it never happened before. Been to dealership several times and they still could not diagnose it cause it doesn't play for long enough time for them to find out what is wrong. I got a feeling that something is fuked up so went with the extended warranty to cover my ass. Plus with the long list of issue since new, I just really want a peace in mind.

Perhaps, but the original quote was nearly $7k.

Hi

Is there anything to say that you have to get the extended warranty from a Stealer in your State? A friend of mine suggested his brother was sick of being ripped off by the sole Stealer here in Perth so got quotes from NSW and VIC and ended up signing up with a Stealer in Melbourne at a significantly reduced price...under $3,000 if I recall correctly.

Not sure if this was just BS to impress me or if it was true. If it is true then I know next year when mine is due to be looked at it's what I am going to do.

Food for thought...

Was that the original factory warranty extension?

Ideally, I would want to get it from the local dealer; they are the ones that will be doing the paperwork on any claims...

It's only worth it, if I can use it (know what I mean?)

I'm going to be in a similar position in a couple of months...

Did you check what it covers? Is it the same as the factory warranty, or are there some "slight differences?"

Is the roof covered?

My roof has been playing up quite a bit recently, I'm about to take it in for the 3rd time in 2 months (and it isn't summer!). At least I'll have a documented issue history, although not sure whether that will help.

Yes, what exactly does the extended warranty cover? I bet the dealer will come up any lame excuses to deny any claims or come up with exclusion clauses such as consumable items, tear and wear given the age of the vehicle etc etc

I bought the extended warranty for my 335i 6MT. It has already paid for itself, sort of. I bought it because I knew the N54 motor was new and unproven and my gut just told me to do it.

Here on B-Post, I saw that BMW itself had extended the warranty on the turbos to 8 years/82K miles. That was in response to a class action law suit, however, so I don't know if it's applicable to you folks Down Under. Similarly, I know for us, the HPFP is warrantied for 10 years/100K miles, but again, I don't know if it's applicable in Australia.

So, above, I said it paid for itself "sort of" because it was in force when my turbo waste gates needed replacing/fixing and that event occurred prior to BMW extending the warranty on that part and my SA said that that repair was about $4000.

OFF TOPIC:
It's a good thing a 3er doesn't cost $140K here because I'd never buy one. It'd be cheaper to have a chauffeur, which is exactly what I'd do instead and I would give up parking, be dropped off at the front door of where ever I have to go and never have to concern myself with car maintenance. I worked in L.A. for two years and that's exactly what I did.

Yes the new car one doesn't have all those exclusions listed in the PDS.

I got the 3 year premium selection. Cost me $3.6k to extend it, and I am happy that I did. Things go wrong with these cars - expensive things - because of all the technology in them. Already I have gotten free software upgrades to deal with the dreaded ticking that Valvetronic engines sometimes get, and now they are looking into an adaptive headlight failure.
