DIY: Replacing water pump 2007 328xi/ Looks easy

Has anyone replaced one of these themselves? I saw a thread or two on changing the water pumps on 335i's but nothing for 328i's electronic pump.
It looks very easy to replace on my own and save me $600 bucks.


I bought the pump from the dealer already for $571.

Any pointers or things to lookout for when replacing it?

Check Youtube. I think I saw a few videos there last time. Make sure you have all the tools necessary. Yeah it looks easy but is not. I ve heard its time consuming.

It's very time consuming and there's no real way around that, how "hard" it is depends on your comfort with the motor.

335 DIY is basically exactly the same process as 328's. Only the 335d have a standard belt driven pump

do the thermostat at the same time. there's definitively a diy for it, seen it a few times.

The car has 131,000 miles I bought it new, so this is the first water bump. It failed this morning while driving to work. First the temp light came on the fell into Limp home mode.

Romeo I knew the pump would fail soon, I should of replaced it long ago.

Wow ok. Sorry to hear that. I am at 104k miles now and so far no issues, but should start shopping around for a WP soon before is too late.

Yeah Romeo you should replace your pump soon because it will cripple your car.
I just bought a 08 335i and purchased a warranty with it to cover my butt if the induction system has issues. Turbo's can be very expensive.

Id change your t-stat while your at it also...
I attempted to replace mine but having my car on jacks, laying on my back in the garage in the summer and took two days off from work(1 day waiting on parts ), i ended up handing the job over to my mechanic. It is very doable your self and I consider myself a decent mechanic and do many other fix it jobs on my car and I work with my hands and tools as a profession. I just decided it was a one time replacement so had it done by a mechanic.

Remove splash guard from bottom of car (10mm bolts i thing) I'd drain your antifreeze/coolant from the radiator. When you look at the pump and t-stat its self explanatory. Remove hoses that are attached to pump and t-stat. Unbolt pump and t-stat, install new, reattach hoses. Refill antifreeze and be sure to bleed your antifreeze.

The Xi/xdrive has a few extra suspension components and axle parts that make it a tighter squeeze but doable if you have the time should take like a day. GL

I did this just a few weeks ago. It's not excessively complicated, but it is a b*tch and a half. There is so little room to work. I replaced the T-stat at the same time and realized even though my bentley manual says to take it out first, the pump had to come out first and go in last. A lot of my frustration came from poorly placed hose clamps and getting the hoses off without damaging anything. Everything went back together surprisingly easy. Since you are just replacing the pump, it should be fairly straight forward. Dont forget to replace the aluminum bolts.

I did it on a 2007 328xi. It's not hard, just a pain in the butt. Very tight squeeze in there.

And ouch on $571! Husker BMW has it for $396 plus shipping.

I replaced it last night and everything went smooth. The only issue is hardly any space to work in that area. I replaced the T-stat also

It took around 2 hours including a short break. I was a little concerned about getting all the air out of the system, but after reading a DIY post on degassing the cooling system I felt better and got it done.
