Catted DP/Exhaust Options

Hello N55 folks, new guy here. Picked up a '11 M-Sport 335i a few months ago, and already had the PPK Stage 1 installed. That upgrade made a huge difference and I am loving this car.

That being said, I want more power, so I started looking at DPs and exhaust systems. I am settled on the BMW Performance Exhaust as I love the sound, and was wondering if adding a Catted DP is worth it? I would love to remove a little turbo lag, but would it be worth it without a custom tune? If so, which brand?

Thoughts? This car is amazing, huge step up from the G37 sedan I had before

Hi there

I'm in somewhat the same position you're in. I have the PPK and i already have the PE. A cattless dp is no option for me (to loud and smelly). I have some doubts... The PE is already pretty progressive on the sound...

Performance wise, it really first gets usefull if you have a tune... Catted dp's aren't the big HP solutions...

Hi Ry, I had the BMW PE+Catted DP and it was a wonderful combination that sounded amazing. Once you change the DP, you can really hear the turbo spool and it really decreased the turbo lag. I sold my BMW PE two weeks ago as the combination was getting too loud for my family. If you are interested in getting a catted DP, I have an iCarbon one for sale if you're interested. Thanks!

That's actually the reason why i didn't get a dp...

Is the difference big between PE with and without catted dp?

Great info thanks, so it seems a DP really makes the car a lot louder... not crazy about that. Do you have a link for iCarbon?

This is pretty much my planned upgrade path as well. I plan on: PPK--->catted DP--->PE--->IC. The PE will be go/no-go based on how loud the car is with the DP. I may skip the IC if I detect no heatsoak on spirited summer drives.

Sounds nice I will get the PE next and we can compare... let me know if you notice a nice bump with the catted DP, if so, I will jump on one as well.

I can tell you I beat on the car last weekend in Miami and I saw oil temps rise to 250 degrees (which was a first). After cruising for a few miles it went back down to normal.

I don' think the PE will give you any power gain, just sound. I believe most owners convince themselves the car is faster because a) it is louder and b) they just spent $1500 on an exhaust.

I am getting a baseline dyno done next week and will redyno after putting a few miles on the PPK. Hope to see 275whp stock and 300 with the tune since my local place uses a Dynojet. I think I will be satisfied if the car remains relatively quiet, fairly economical, perfectly reliable and very driveable at around 315whp. My goals are to keep the budget under $3000 so the PE might get left out and I am torn between getting the PPK with upgraded cooling hardware and air ducts OR an intercooler. No way I have money in my allowed budget for both.

BMW claims the PE will give around 5hp. Considering how they lowball all their other horsepower figures, I wouldn't dismiss it so readily.

if your looking for performance go with the DP, yes catless smells a bit but gives you the most gains... it is also a bit louder... if your interested in just sound, then the PE with the PPK is a good choice

Problem is, catless with PPK will give you warning lights and cat efficiency codes. There is no catless DP "fix" for N55s that I know of.

If I'm not mistaken you'll still get the error message with a catted DP as well....

I'm not looking for a super loud car, power is my main goal. That's why I was wondering if a catted down-pipe results in good gains over the stock one (without getting too loud).

BMS does have a DP "fix" apparently.

AFAIK, the fix for N55 is not out yet. They thought that they could use the same device they made for the N20 but it doesn't work for the N55

I didn't know that a catted DP would still throw codes. Can anyone confirm this? I was trying to build up a car using the factory-backed tune as the basis in order to keep everything kinda sorta warranty-friendly. That might explain why Dinan has no DP on offer. It is simple enough to make, shows great gains but would foul up their whole OEM "approved" approach.

PM from AR:

Re: DP for N55 catted
Depends on the car... With the new BMW firmware there is no way to guarantee no way to throw a CEL.

Sometimes the car sees the flow between the o2's as to much causing the CEL to turn on.

Burger should have a DP fix available soon though!

Last I heard BMS had shelved the project. This sucks. I thought I would be good to go with a catted DP.

Trust me bro, just go catless. BMW won't care if your catless or catted, if there gonna void your warranty for it, they will void it regardless of which aftermarket DP you have. I wanted to go catted all this time. I pulled the trigger on catless and love it!

If I run a catless DP with the BMW PPK, I will have constant 'service required' lights and the car will store codes. I don't want to be in a position in which the engine or turbo fails and BMW corporate decides to deny the warranty claim based on that. I can hang any aftermarket stuff on the car and so long as it doesn't cause a code to be stored, BMW will never know about it unless the regional rep decides to physically look at it for some strange reason. As soon as I mess with an aftermarket tune or the car begins to store codes, there exists a trail of evidence so to speak. If need be, I'll wait a bit for a DP fix to come out. It can't be that hard to make something that plugs in between the secondary O2 sensor and the ECU and alters the signal.
