I spotted a matte black wrapped F30 3 Series yesterday on the M4 Motorway heading towards the city.

Are you doing it at Provinyl? If so I worked for them. They're assholes first, and they get amateurs who have never done anything to work on ur car. Such as me. I never worked on vinyl other then at home on my car (small parts) and got me to work on a rolls Royce. Also they don't prep the car good and the edges come undone within weeks. Were trying to finish quick. Overall I don't like vinyl wrap. Makes a BMW look crap or any luxury car. Keep it paint oh also overtime the matte colors get ruined from the oils in ur skin from touching the car and washes want help after say 6 months. An u can't polish it to fix unlike ur paint. Overall I say no.

I don't get the matte look at all, it just reminds me of a half painted car or a car that is in desperate need of a buff

Pretty sure, here's the thread just after he did it. I agree tho, the finish made me question whether it was Vinyl too - great job!
