I had excatly this problem this morning - E92 325i (June 2010) passenger side rear. Could easily repeat the problem by bouncing the car. It was raining - booked the car into the dealer for a look. Now this afternoon I can't repeat the fault/ sound.
Reading this thread I'm wondering is this a 'feature' or a fault?

I don't think a noise at the rear is a common fault. The creaking usually is the front.

Well had an update from the dealers. They are now replacing a shock, bump stop and arb droplink.

Is it ok to replace just one shock on one side like that?. I would have thought they'd do them in pairs but BMW will only let them replace the affected parts. I guess as the car has only done 12k it won't really matter.

Hoping one of the three fixes the problem. I've been assured that they will do a alignment after completion.

Garage List
Might be wrong, but I thought it was only the front ARB that had a drop link. And yes, if it was me I'd insist both dampers were replaced (even if I had to contribute to the cost).

Yes, I probably can have both replaced if I contribute 300 (which is steep), but they are saying that their TSB says that if under 50,000 miles, they can only replace the affected part. I've owned my car since pretty much new and its done 12k. I can't justify really spending 300 to do the other side.

This was in my old E92 buddy, but yes, the dealer replaced several things and it turned out to be the brake reaction bushes that cured it. The car has since been traded in though but it was noise free for 3 months.

No that was the ARB bushes that they replaced initially. They then replaced the brake reaction/control arm bushes to cure it.

Creaking Bushes

Yep, I got the same problem e90 (M Sport 2008). Creaking front and rear over pretty much most speed bumps and lumps on the road - Only when Wet or Damp weather - in dry conditions there is no noise.

There seems to be no handling issue with the vehicle, so what am I looking at - worn out parts/broken parts? that need replacing.

- or go down the Lubrication route.
- or the good old that's the way it is fault.

Got BMW to check over the suspension set-up and no issues came back.

I have the same issue when weather is wet or damp at speed bumps. some mates from the forum said that it might be the additional damper, as bmw names this part (from realoem picture attached is the No 11 part) .
they declare that when tried to lubricate it the noise got away.
I will try it myself and reply the result in some days time.

PS: in realoem it is also mentioned that "The following part is essential when replacing a spring strut: Additional damper, front"
this means that whenever you replace your shocks absorbers you must replace this part too..

That is the bump stop. If your noise is identical to what I had in my old e92 (described on post 1) I can tell you that replacing this is a waste of time and it will not cure it. I had these replaced on both sides. It is the brake reaction bushes.

@ bmwak: thanks for your reply and your information, I read your previous post when you initially referred to the brake reaction bushes..The truth is that I am not familiar with these parts, maybe you/one could give me/us a S/N of the parts or a photo/url from realoem?
many thanks

Sure Terry, see item 10 (hydrobearing) in the link below...

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...15&hg=31&fg=05

Note that I have made assumptions on your cars specs to find this so do check identical part for your particular model/year. I think they are all the same though.

The part has been revised numerous times and the latest part number is not even of Realoem, as its listed as ended. Looks like BMW is aware of the noise and have tried to revise the part to cure the problem. I had them fitted in 2012 so must have had the newest part in now sold 320d

Good luck!

@ bmwak : many thanks for the information. I thought that these are called control arm bushes (I thought that tension strut is the control arm) I didn't know that they are called brake reaction bushes.
I will try to find their new p/n then or maybe buying from powerflex could also solve the issue
thanks again

PS: there are two part numbers in the pic...maybe the 2nd is the old one that stopped?
edit:
just checked at american site bmwfans.info and it appears that the the 1st p/n appeared in realoem as hydrobearing started production when 2nd p/n discontinued. the products also have similar weights 500gr and 470gr

Yep it is, dealers refer to it as brake reaction bush and that arm is not as the tension strut.

Good luck sorting the noise.

Thanks for the info bmwak

Having read a number of reviews on this problem it would appear that part could well be the culprit.

But is the part defective/not performing properly and needs replacing? or is it purely a noise side effect from design.

My car is still under warranty and presumably if BMW have modified this part to rectify a problem, I guess it should be covered.

If it turns out I am not covered are these parts easily sourced to be fitted by my trusted local dealer, not spoke to him yet but I'm sure he could source the part for me.

Cheers.

I think its simply a noise issue, rather than a functional issue. Note if your warranty is the insured or used car warranty, this is likely to be classed as wear and tear and won't be covered. A different story if you have your new car warranty valid. I had it done when my car was under the new car warranty. I can't see it being too expensive to get a local indy to do it.

I just found that one can find these parts in ebay from meyle (hd series) for about 30pounds the couple.
also, here are 2 threads regarding this issue (the diy guide is for replacement the whole arm and not just the bushes).

Ive got the EXACT problem at the rear drivers side. When going slow like under 30mph there is an awful screech. Bounced the car and replicated sound. Took to garage was raining and sound was gone. He though it was bushes intially then ramped up and noticed the shocks on this wheel was gone. So not sure if I should replace shocks or bushes.

Did you find a solution, and if so what was it? Thanks in advance
