Does the n54 pop and make noises with the pe and ppk? I have an 08 335. Or just the n55 does it?

^^^ Absolutely! Pop burble and crackle. Simply addictive. Anyone "tired" of their ride and want to reinvigorate it, the BMW PE is the way to go.

There's definitely drone "low frequency faint humming noise as if you were playing a bass note on repeat, not rattle sounds" with the PE on low revs ~2K on freeway compared to stock, noticeable but not terrible.

Mine was dealership installed and I also had LTBMW checked it out (they didn't see anything wrong with the install) and they've said it's normal for an AT with PE to drone.

I would be fine if the drone is very faint. However, the drone actually gets quite loud when you're going uphill or under load and going uphill at >60 MPH and maintain around the 2K rev range. I used a sound meter and the cabin noise level went from ~68 dB (freeway cruising) to ~80 dB. It's loud enough that I had to turn up my music to compensate for it. Downshifting the gear in DS mode reduced the drone, but it's still audible.

Out of all the mods (FMIC, ER Oil Cooler + CP, BMW PPK 2, BMW PS, Wavetrac LSD and BMW PE) that I have done so far, I have to say BMW PE is the most disappointing mod for my car. I have an 2010 E90 335i AT (N54).

If you're not sensitive to droning noises, then PE is actually a decent upgrade. My friends noticed the difference the day I switched from stock to PE and the rev sound >3K range is actually fairly exotic.

Anyhow, enough of the rant. I might actually convert back to stock soon or see if I can get the 335is muffler retrofitted to my E90.

i love my PE.. it was quite loud when i first had it installed. but after about a week or so when it started breaking in. it got more refined. its still loud when you step on it a little but it can be quite while just cruising around.. also it makes amazing rumble sounds and you will love it in garages and tunnels!

It's been my experience that automatic cars are more susceptible to drone because of the nature of the torque converter keeping the rpms in the 2K-3K zone during cruising. My Dinan FF doesn't drone at all, and wife's PE (on 128 convertible) doesn't either - but we both have 6MT. Previous cars with automatic and modified exhaust seemed to have a "sweet spot" of sorts where the drone was quite noticeable, and the same car with a manual trans had very little drone.

For those of you guys that have the Dinan exhaust on an e90, did you remove the resonator or leave it?

We have a summer vacation each year where several of us long time friends get together, as we are spread out along the east side of the country.

Buddy brought his 335is (he is a member here), which basically has the flapper valve version of the PE exhaust and he did the Golf T mod, so it was essentially a PE exhaust. I'm used to my car (stock + flapper open via JB4)...I thought his didn't sound good at all. I wasn't the only one with that opinion, though we all have an ear for cars that sound a lot better than the N54 ever could.

I'd personally stick with stock; open the flapper, down pipes and secondary cat delete if you want it louder. Perhaps there are decent sounding exhausts for these cars - the PE isn't it.

It's all personal preference. I happen to think my PE (with PPK and 6MT) is the most glorious sounding exhaust I've ever had. Quiet while cruising - no drone whatsoever - pops and crackles on decel are just super cool and at WOT it's got a Ferrari-like wail that's just addicting. Very happy customer here.

Absolutely agree! If someone thinks N54 engine sound is puke and PE is just as yellow, they probably bought the wrong car. Last night I was pulling out of small downtown area after dinner with engine being still warm the car just roared to pause a couple at the crosswalk. My window was rolled down to hear the gentlemen say "that sounds awesome". It was nice being stared down as I drove away while they enjoyed the symphony of my twin hairdryers. I've developed a terminal habit of keeping my window down because I can't get enough of the sound, probably should've bought an E93
