Icebreaker Merino Base Layers : http://www.natureshop.co.uk/Product/...eaker/Tech-Top

Certainly not the cheapest base layer on the market, but we wear these when we go ski-ing. Even in Canada, when it was -25 (+windchill = feels like -40). The base layer, microfleece (anyone will do, cheap one for me), and the ski-jacket and we were warm all day. Okay, we were actually ski-ing, so maybe a wee jumper too if your just standing about watching the skies.

BUT, you can wear the merino all week and it doesn't really smell too bad. Even when you have been sweating it out all day on the slopes. They are definitely worth it. I have about 3 (for long ski holidays).

Layers are most important though. Thick jumpers dont cut it. 4-5 thin layers (less if active) and you should be good.

Awesome country - but bloody expensive!!

Blue lagoon was a really good afternoon out - def recommend it.

Glacier safari - prob the maddest thing you can ever do. Pricey as hell, but so worth doing.

We also went on a tour which came as part of the package and had a brilliant time visiting the geysers etc

Would love to go back!

Really lovely place, will be going back some time. We stayed in Reykjavik for part of our honeymoon and went to the Blue Lagoon and various other trips to huge waterfalls, geysers, etc. We then went on to the Ice Hotel in lapland but you don't want to know about that

To be honest, I'd not worry too much about the cold. I mean, it IS cold but nothing that a decent winter coat and a jumper can't handle.

Here's a few pics...

Looks fab!! We're hoping to see the Northen lights, so have picked a date to fit in with the new moon and apparently 2012-2013 is the Solar Maximus meaning more sun flare activity.....just have to keep everything crossed

Been reading up on the temp and it doesn't seem as bad as I thought

The photo is a bit crap but all I've gt on my phone.

The pool on the left is 40 degrees! At night you can just float about in it next to the hotel, toasty while it snows!! This was in Feb mind. Didn't get to see much of the aurora though a it was cloudy.

Oh, this is the Blue Lagoon Clinic. It's next door to the Blue Lagoon spa, and is meant to be a psoriasis clinic but you an stay there as a hotel guest too.

The Blue Lagoon is fantastic!

The Iceland trip was a random booking (was looking for cheap flights to HongKong at the time!!). Only just started looking into it properly last night, looks like theres loads to do!! We are only staying 3 nights so need to try and make the best use of time. The DSLR is getting lots of use recently .

Stayed there for a week in June.
I found the prices to be on par with the UK. £4 a pint, £10 - £20 for a decent meal in Reykjavik, you just need to research bars and restaurants before you go.

Blue lagoon is about £35 if you pay on the card, but if you take some euros and pay cash it will work out about £25.
