Black Grills Ugly? And other mods...

So,

Plasti-dipped my kidney grills the other day. I personally like it coupled with the black honeycomb grills. However, when I was done my roomate came out and said it doesn't compliment anything on the car and likes the chrome better.

On that note, he also said I need to get black wheels with a chrome lip. Not sure how I feel about that either.

Finally, I will be putting black vinyl over the ambers on the headlights - which I am unsure about.

Feedback?

Picture below (excuse dirty bumper - quick pic)

I think it's "all or nothing", IMHO.

My car is jetblack; the black + chrome accents look very classy.

I think it would look half assed if I did black grilles, but kept the other chrome accents.

I think on TiAG chrome looks better, but that's just my opinion

Why does your roommate's opinion of your car matter to you? If you like it, do it

I think the matte black grille looks nice. As for the wheels, maybe post a Photoshop request in the photos forum and see how you like the look.

I personally do not like the way the headlight cover film looks -- I tried a couple of them but removed them after a few minutes as they looked cheap to me. But they are fairly cheap so if you try them and don't like them you're not too far in the hole

Black vinyl on your headlights will look like shit don't do it.

Your grills look good I say keep them black.

Keep em black. And black out the wheels. And Blacklines. And get the windows tinted. And plastidip the chrome window trim.

You know, when I first saw so many people around the forum posting pics of their cars with black kidneys, my first reaction was to consider it a ridiculous, superfluous change.

But after taking a look at my own car, I realized, "Hey, aside from the grilles, there is no chrome on the exterior." and then it seemed like chrome grilles kinda stood out--and not in a good way.

I still think it depends on the total package of the exterior of a given car, but I'm a lot more open to the idea of black kidneys now-a-days.

The grille looks good, I think I will do the same because silver and chrome don't match

Make the vertical grille slates black, while keeping the grille frame the original chrome. That's the best combination.

It's hard to tell from that pic but yes your roommate may have a point. You often make a car/room/house or anything with paint balanced from a color perspective. If he has that eye then it's worth a listen. The chrome does accent the tiag nicely but other elements come into play. The e90's have a number of accent points. Even dark colors may look better with the chrome grill if they still have light rims, chrome window trim, etc. The grills are at the front so naturally they attract more attention at first glance. If the car is properly balanced they will come across looking better as a whole package.

You need to match it up. All chrome or all black. I think all black looks better on your color car.

Don't like. Looks like your car was damaged, you had to replace the grills and could not afford the chrome...........

I think the chrome license plate frame isn't doing the grille any favors. A matte black plate frame would help, unless you're a Reno BMW fan of course.

What do you have as far as window trim goes? Chrome wouldn't lend itself to a track car'ish theme if that's what you're going for. Tinted windows also compliment a blacked out theme.

Wheels are expensive. I think you'd be fine with silver painted alloys.

You know what they say about opinions though. Go with whatever you like, but try to keep a consistent theme for the best results.

I like minor nuanced changes. I have matte black trim, so I matched it with the grill. I got LED side marker and turn signal bulbs to get rid of the egg yolk look I just added a matte black front plate frame and was surprised that it really made a difference over no frame. I also have 30% tint on the side and back glass.

Here's my car minus the plate frame....

I don't like the black grille on lighter colored cars. I think it looks best on lemans blue, and other darker cars. I know there's no chrome on the rest of my car, but I don't have to have it all match up.

Go with gloss black on the TiAg. I originally did matte black and thought it look kinda cheap with the pre-lci

I had the black matte grills at first and didn't like the look, glossy black may look better on your car also. I like the vinyl on the head lights if done properly, but it does look better on a black car! As you can tell everybody has a some what different opinion do the mods that you like, it's your ride!
