Are All Catless Downpipes the same? - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

I've been looking at downpipes for N54 and most of them appear to look very similar (shape, size etc.). I guess the material and welding could be different...

So, are they all the same? If not, what is the difference and what to look for in downpipes?

Please help me understand it

they do the same thing. but its the quality and fitment that sets them apart.

+1, another thing that set them apart is the diameter. Most kits offer either 2.5 or 3in. The extra half inch helps flow a little bit more air of course. Regardless, both are better than stock so it's really a preference thing.

There's also ceramic coating and thermal coating options which I believe the same.

There are also a few on the market that offer a flex pipe. I can't talk too much on this because honestly I stop following dp after I installed mines.

OP, just do a search and you'll find plenty of 'which dp is the best' or 'what do you think about this set of dp' to get a better idea or understanding of what you're looking for. Hope this help and good luck.

Was wondering the same thing, we dont get as many options here in the UK [well not that ive seen] and would like to do mine. Do you get much popping and banging from the back if you do this? Police around here dont like that one bit .

Has anyone had their dp's failed?

I don't want to discuss which brand is better, but rather what sets them apart from each other. Something what Manny_World said, like the diameter.

Your original question was fine, you were just looking for a answer to which is regarded as the best/most reliable. Not everyone wants to trawl through 100s of posts looking for a answer. You always get people on any forum throwing in the "use the search" shit. they forget when they 1st got the car and wanted to know whats,what.

Exactly. I had scanned a number of threads looking for an answer, but they all end up in arguing what brand is better. But merely mention why.

As far as I see it, they are just pipes welded together. Assuming they don't fail, what is characteristic to set them apart and to justify such a price difference?

You are correct. Only time that dp will fail if you ran catted and after a while and the cats stop working. With catless, it's all just preference. What set them apart in price is fitment and diameter, but time have changed over the years. Some budget kit had fitment issues, but a new company VRSF (something like that) make more affordable sets with good fitment I hear. Best bet is to browse the FS section for a used set that's known for perfect fitment. Pipes will be pipes, new or old.
