I had a 2008 Mustang GT and just sold my 2008 Z06. I tracked both cars and knew the basic upgrades I would need for the track. My question is what are the basic mods needed for a 335is for a track day? My current mods are H&R Sport Springs, 12.5mm hubcentric spacers, and a JB3 running Map 3.

I plan to swap out my fluid for RBF600, which I have run in all my cars with great success.

Are the stock brake lines OK for 3 30-minute sessions? What about engine oil? Anything with a little more anti-wear additives I should run like an Amsoil or Redline? What about the pads and rotors? Can I cook those in a day? Thanks!

Brakes are fine stock though high-temp fluid is a must, and you got that covered. Standard BMW engine oil is fine too.

yep, high temp brake fluids. BMW synthetic engine oil is good enough. Keep in mind that both of these are recommended to be flushed every 2-4 days of DE. Expect 270+ for the oil temp if you're pushing hard with a tune; this is still normal and shouldn't trigger any limp if all else is well.

I've done about 15 days this year with all stock hardware and stg 1 tune, but had no mechanical issue except brakes. For some reason, I simply could not get rid of brake jutter when they got heated up. I would highly recommend PFC pads (either 01, 06, or 08); don't get anything else for the track.

BTW, C6Z... what made you get rid of it?

Ahh my old 08 Z06... H/C/I and 540 at the wheels... I moved down to pocket the money since I'm getting married and looking to buy a house. Unfortunate, but the bmw is an impressive car because of the totality of the things it does well. Nothing great, but a lot of things very well which makes it what it is. I'll know for sure after my track sessions lol

I would pull the trigger on some upgraded brake pads just so the experience is somewhat enjoyable and you don't rip through pads. You will enjoy yourself!

That certainly makes sense, and good for you to be able to let go of such beast for more important things. I'd be very interested in what you think of your new car at the track comparatively.

Depending on how hard you drive you might need an upgraded oil cooler (stock oil cooler is insufficient generally) upgraded pads, and distilled water in the radiator.

If you're still on the RFT's you'll want some real tires...

Turn off the JB3 to establish a performance baseline.

Bleed with RBF600 and pick track-capable pads of your choice. OEM pads won't cut it if you have some track experience. Oil, brake lines, rotors, tires will be fine. Not great, but fine. Watch your oil and water temps and see where you go from there.

Lol trust me I know that, just hoped for more post exposure on there. I see the road course section on this forum is a bit more active than the one for the Z06's.

Good call on the baseline, I was so excited I almost forgot to do that first!

Agreed with Peter that track-oriented brake pads are a good idea if you have track experience. The OEM pads work - I'm surprised how long my lasted given how hard I abused them - but aren't in their element operating at very high temperatures. The stopping distances they provide just are not precise.

I actually think I'm going to do what I did with the Z06... go with a Hawk HP+ pad to learn the car first, then swap out pads and rotors (for track days) for some PFC 08s and some drilled or slotted rotors. I prefer the slotted because of the higher initial bite

If you've tracked before get pads. Oem is fine for beginners who aren't braking deep but I suspect you'll fade them assuming you'll be driving pretty fast.

Btw I hate hp+, slightly better bite than stock but 10x the squeal. May as well just use oem for street and DTC60/70 (or equivalent) for track.

Stock pads were fine for 1 day at Carolina Motorsports Park, notorious for being hard on brakes, but yes, upgraded pads are recommended.

I just wanted to emphasize this. Maybe this is just me, but I've gone thru 3 sets of rotors and 4 sets of pads in 1 season (~15 days); none of them has worked yet. I'm not that great of a driver, but still, the disgusting steering jutter from brakes heating up is really preventing me to get consistent laps and killing my learning curve. I've tried Carbotech XP12, Hawk HT-10, Cool Carbon S/T, and OEM pads. After a long research and interrogation with fellow track people, now I have new PFC01s sitting in my garage to be tried next. Take it for what it's worth...

FWIW PFC06 and cheap blanks have gotten me through 12+ days and 2000 miles of driving to and from track and I still have plenty of meat left on both rotors and pads. Granted my car is lighter but still... Will you use your brakes too much lol.

You CAN track the car just fine stock, but a few recommendations to be on the safe side:

*Upgraded Pads
*Upgraded Brake Fluid

*Better tires - nothing crazy and not needed, but might make the experience more enjoyable.
*Camber plates - help to save the outside shoulder of your better tires mentioned above

+1 but I'll also add a fixed back seat to that list. You'd be surprised how your ass can act as a sixth sense when your body stays put thought the turns. Not to mention your core isn't as fatigued...

Recommended for sure - for most it's out of the question if the car is a DD however. For those people, I recommend the CG Lock
