If we are talking about modern performance cars, I prefer the power delivery of a NA engine. New turbo engines have such a flat torque curve that they don't feel like they are doing anything. I like an engine that you wind up a bit, its like foreplay. In my mind I am comparing my e60 M5 and its fantastic v-10 to the Panamera Turbo I test drove. The Panamera is faster an more powerful, but it just didn't feel as exciting.

That being said, i like the fuel economy of a modern FI engine. I have also found that supercharged engine strikes a nice balance between the other two. My S4 feels like it has a larger displacement NA engine instead of the smaller SC engine that it actually has.

Not all turbo engines are equal. Some are laggy, some are not. Modern engines running minimal boost like the N54 are not very laggy, but something like a WRX STI is somewhat laggy.

Not all naturally aspirated engines are equal. Some have very peaky power like the S2000. Some like the Corvette are not.

I don't see where this thread can really go besides devolving into a pissing match. The question is so general that you're just going to have people picking and choosing their examples to support their bias.

I prefer turbocharged engines, because I can have the overall displacement of a large motor when I want it, but the fuel economy of a smaller motor when that extra power isn't needed.

Perfection is anything with a big engine and any turbo.. Look at some of the new super-cars coming out.

Although I do make some exceptions for cars like carrera gt, V10 M5 and a couple more..

The new twin-scroll turbos are nice - my previous experience with turbos was in the 80s when there was a lot of lag, so I didn't care for them then but they've come along nicely. Even so, I like a revvy high-rpm engine, which is why I've got an M Coupe now.

Twin scroll turbos are an improvement, but VGT Turbos are where it's at. Once there are controllers readily available to tune the vanes I can see more and more people converting to VGT turbos. I'd love to have one on my WRX.

Possible better than that are the electric turbos that Subaru, BMW, and some other makers are developing.

Yeah interesting stuff. I'm curious as to the power consumption an electric turbo would consume, or if it possibly generated electricity. If it consumed a lot of amps it would need a pretty heavy duty alternator to supply it.

Side note to that I know the VW Touareg uses or used to use a water cooled alternator; I'm sure the same component was probably used in the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne siblings.

What are some major differences between a Variable Nozzle Turbine turbo (VNT) and a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) and a twinscroll turbo?
